The Talking Stick Golf Club, next to the Talking Stick Casino in Scottsdale, Arizona, was designed by Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw. Owned by the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community, the North and South golf courses are two uniquely different courses that provide a serene yet challenging memorable day of play for golfers of all skill levels. Both courses were given four and a half stars by Golf Digest in 2012; the same year, Golfweek Magazine gave Talking Stick the award for Best Resort Courses. The South Course offers a traditional, Midwest-style layout, filled with trees and flowing streams. This is the course you see as you pass through Talking Stick's front gates. The South's first tee is next to the driving range. The South Course, being more generous off the tee than the North, provides more challenging second shots into the greens. The greens are smaller, elevated and defended by deep bunkers, and the fairways are lined with trees.

Set in the foothills of South Mountain, Foothills Golf Club in South Phoenix is a Jay Morrish and Tom Weiskopf design that has been delighting players of all levels and delivering good value ever since it opened in 1988. The layout, which anchors an upscale residential community, delivers a stunningly scenic round with challenges that novices and highly accomplished golfers alike can revel in. Foothills Golf Club calls itself a desert links. Four sets of tee markers provide distance options between 5,441 yards and 6,901 yards on a playing field that boasts appealing elevation changes. The game here is not about forced carries. Wide fairways with generous landing areas inspire smooth swings on tee shots, while the closer you get to the greens the more trouble you’ ll need to avoid. Some 65 bunkers lurk in strategic spots, while rocky desert looms beyond the groomed turf. Much of the fun of playing Foothills Golf Club comes from its variety of holes. The 6th hole is a Tom Weiskopf trademark test— a drivable par 4. The par-5 8th is a signature hole, as the fairway proceeds downhill and leads to a green guarded by water on the right that loops beyond the putting surface. Lakes enter play on three holes, including the 13th and 14th, which both hug opposite sides of the water. Foothills Golf Club’ s collection of tough par 3s is another strength of the golf course. Once you get to the greens, you’ ll find smooth putting surfaces that are pretty easy to read. When in doubt, remember that everything breaks toward South Mountain. Foothills Golf Club’ s clubhouse features a pro shop, locker rooms, special event rooms, a theater, restaurant and patio. The Sunset Grill restaurant serves up comfort food and a gorgeous mountain view. A tee time at Foothills Golf Club promises plenty of enjoyment at a very reasonable price point in South Phoenix.

The Golf Club at Vistoso is part of the master-planned community, Rancho Vistoso, located in Northwest Tucson. Although part of a large development, you are still able to get the feel for being in the middle of the desert on every hole. No two holes run parallel to each other as the golf course is designed in a figure eight flow. At Vistoso, pristine Sonoran desert plays host to stately saguaros, beautiful desert flora and spectacular mountain views. Designed by Tom Weiskopf, this par-72 course offers yardage ranges from 6,932 for championships, to 5,165 for ladies and juniors. With every hole a "postcard," this true desert golf experience is challenging yet playable.
