Palm Desert, CA

Shadow Mountain Golf Club

The semi-private Shadow Mountain Golf Club in Palm Desert, California, located just two blocks from the world famous El Paseo shopping district, exudes a palpable sense of history. This 1958 design by seven-time Major champion Gene Sarazen is Palm Desert’ s original golf course and it remains a cherished historic landmark and centerpiece of the community. Adding interest to the game at Shadow Mountain Golf Club, attractive mid-century modern homes line the fairways. Now under ownership that is committed to renovating the highly walkable playing field and restoring its luster, the par-70 layout is a short, sporty, fun and affordable test with three sets of tee markers. Shadow Mountain Golf Club measures a user-friendly 5,062 yards from the front tees, 5,223 yards from the middle, and 5,375 yards from the back markers. The 34-36 configuration features a front nine with three par 3s, five par 4s, and a par 5, and a back nine that has just one par 3 and one par 5 to go along with its par 4s. Players of all ages and ability levels fill up the tee sheets at Shadow Mountain Golf Club. Sarazen’ s routing provides a nice mix of straightaway and dogleg holes. Though the course is short, it isn’ t easy. In fact, it can be frustrating for those who can’ t hit straight shots or control their distances. Out of bounds looms wide of the narrow fairways at Shadow Mountain Golf Club. With over 600 mature palm trees and also some tall pines, the fairways are well defined. Strategically placed sand bunkers protect the greens. A few holes require an aerial entry to reach the putting surface. The small greens tilt from back-to-front and result in many three putts. Senior players gravitate to Shadow Mountain Golf Club because it is short and walkable, but the course should interest anyone looking for a novel golf experience in the Palm Springs region. Practice facilities are limited to warm-up cages and a putting green. “ The Flamingo,” Shadow Mountain Golf Club's exciting new 18-hole putting course, has become "the place" at the club to hangout with a snack and a beverage. When you have a tee time for the main course, play on The Flamingo is free. Don’ t miss out on a tee time at Shadow Mountain Golf Club— this sporty little layout is a historic Palm Springs treasure.

Hauppauge, NY

Wind Watch Golf Course

Wind Watch Golf & Country Club in Hauppauge, New York, is as pretty and fun an inland course as you’ ll find on Long Island. The layout, built by Joe Lee in 1971 to anchor an attractive neighborhood and updated by Stephen Kay in 1997, is a ClubCorp daily-fee facility that shares a parking lot with the Hyatt Regency Long Island. A favorite of locals and visitors alike, the elegant Wind Watch Golf & Country Club playing field boasts tree-lined fairways, 12 lakes and ponds adorned with fountains, a cascading waterfall, and distant views from a couple of the highest points on Long Island (though you cannot quite see the Sound.) Those highest points come at the very beginning and end of the round. The 1st hole is a straightaway par 4 flanked by trees, so you’ ll be tested right out of the gate. The 6th hole, the first of four water-bound par 3s at Wind Watch Golf & Country Club, requires a carry over both a pond and bunkers to reach the green. The short par-4 11th maxes out at 311 yards to tempt long hitters to try to drive the green, but beware of the water right and OB left. The round concludes with the only dogleg on the course and a rare hole on Wind Watch Golf & Country Club’ s back nine with no water in play. The severely uphill approach leads to a rousing view at the three-tiered putting surface that is the toughest green on the course. Though the club is noted for its high vantage points, aside from the beginning and ending of the round, the playing field is actually pleasantly flat. Besides its abundance of water hazards, Wind Watch Golf & Country Club challenges players with more than 70 bunkers, many of which are large. Practice facilities include a driving range and short game area. Seasons Grill in the Wind Watch Golf & Country Club clubhouse has earned a following among local golfers and non-golfers with its casual indoor and outdoor dining. A tee time on this lush, delightfully landscaped and scenic course makes for a thoroughly enjoyable and challenging day of golf.
