Course photo for Preakness Valley Golf CoursePublic tee-time evidence

Wayne, NJ

Preakness Valley Golf Course

One of two golf courses at historic Preakness Valley Golf Course, the East Course is a solid layout with plenty of opportunities for scoring and challenges as well. Run by Passaic County, Preakness Valley has two 18-hole layouts -- with the other being the West Course -- and is the home of the Passaic County Amateur Championship. It's located on the same 377-acre property as the historic Day Mansion, which was built in 1770 and restored in 1934 by the county. Golf at PreaknessValley goes back to 1892, but the county purchased and restored the golf course in 1931. The East Course, a par 70 that plays 5,850 yards from the back tees, has three sets of tees. It has just two par 5s, the third and the sixth, and they are good ones, even though both are less than 500 yards from the back tees. The sharp dogleg right third wraps around the second and first holes to a green protected by a large bunker. The first two holes are par 4s, with the second being just 303 yards from the back tees, a definite birdie opportunity. The par-5 sixth, which is just 475 yards, is the no. 1 handicap hole on the East Course. It's straightaway, but there is a creek that crosses the fairway about two thirds of the way to the green, which is guarded by two bunkers in the front. Another unusual feature is the front nine ends with a par 3, and the back nine begins with one as well. Both courses share good practice facilities that include a driving range, short-game area and practice putting green. Inside the large clubhouse, there's also a golf shop and snack shop that serves sandwiches and beverages.

Course photo for Spooky Brook Golf CoursePublic tee-time evidence

Somerset, NJ

Spooky Brook Golf Course

Spooky Brook Golf Course, located in Franklin Township, New Jersey, is an 18-hole course owned by Somerset County. The course, an Ed Ault design that opened in 1970, has long been a popular tee time in Central New Jersey because it is very walkable and a test that players of all ability levels can enjoy. Whereas Quail Brook Golf Course and Neshanic Valley Golf Course are the stars of the Somerset County Park system and have, over the years, garnered acclaim and attention beyond New Jersey, Spooky Brook Golf Course rates as the most beginner- and senior-friendly of the five county layouts. As a golf course architect, Ed Ault created his designs with ordinary players in mind, always with an emphasis on moderating the difficulty and making fairways and greens accessible. So it is at Spooky Brook Golf Course— what you see is what you get. If you like to walk, this is an especially fun layout. The setting is delightful and free of housing. There’ s not a lot of trouble to wreck a scorecard here. Even the trees aren’ t a big threat to par, as they are well spaced out by the fairways. Many fairways run side by side with generous rough areas between them. Since the rough normally isn’ t onerous, players generally find errant shots and make a decent recovery. Four sets of tees provide different degrees of difficulty between 5,161 yards and 6,655 yards. The course can be sneaky long, as three par 4s on the front nine top 400 yards from the tips. The back nine is the more interesting of the two sides at Spooky Brook Golf Course. On the 17th hole players must hit over a pond to get to the green. A small tributary (once named Spooky Brook) also winds across several fairways, but the hazard really doesn’ t pose much of a threat. The greens at Spooky Brook Golf Course are inviting targets with moderate slopes and undulations. Spooky Brook Golf Course gives players of all skill levels a chance to feel good about their games. Over the years the playing field has earned praise for its conditioning. Practice facilities at Spooky Brook Golf Course include a driving range and a putting green where you can also do some chipping. This is a spartan facility. There’ s a pro shop but no restaurant. You can get drinks and snacks from vending machines. For a fun, relaxing round of golf at a solid, well-maintained but no-frills facility in Central New Jersey, consider a tee time at Spoo

Course photo for Skyway Golf Course at Lincoln Park WestPublic tee-time evidence

Jersey City, NJ

Skyway Golf Course at Lincoln Park West

One of the betst nine-hole courses in the country, Skyway Golf Course at Lincoln Park West is a challenging, beautiful layout that plays against the backdrop of the namesake bridge in the background. Designed by Roy Case and Jeff Grossman, this links-style course, which was built on top of an old landfill, features great views of the Pulaski Skyway that stretches from Newark to Jersey City. There are also Manhattan skyline views and nine well-crafted holes with rolling fairways, undulating greens, a few water features, and plenty of bunkering. Opened in 2015, the course features excellent hole separation and a nice variety of holes. The course, which was rated no. 8 in the state on Golf Advisor in 2021, has four sets of tees and plays to a par of 36 that stretches to 3,247 yards. It has three par 5s, three par 4s and three par 3 holes. The second hole gives the first really good look at the Skyway with the Hackensack River also in the background and tall fescue framing the hole around the fairway. At 200 yards from the tips, it's a great test and the longest par-3 on the course. The longest hole on the course is the 532-yard, par-5 sixth, a tight hole that might be the most difficult hole at Skyway. The course also ends with a par-3, the 175-yard ninth, which plays alongside the river. In addition to the course, there's also a golf academy.?
