The Hidden Valley Golf Club is a unique golf layout for Southern California. The overall design of the course concentrates on preserving the natural vegetation, dry streams, and boulder outcroppings throughout the property. There are five sets of tees on each hole which allow this golf course to cater to golfers of varying skill levels. The back tees challenge the expert golfer to carry the ball over natural canyons and ravines to spacious and well-manicured fairways. The middle tees may require some carry over natural areas while reducing the length for the average golfers. The forward tees are situated so that there is little or no natural areas that must be hit over. The golf course ranges from 6,721 and 6,330 yards from the back two tees to 4,649 yards from the forward tees. The contrast of a well-manicured golf course against the rugged terrain provide a spectacular setting for golf.

The semi-private Shadow Mountain Golf Club in Palm Desert, California, located just two blocks from the world famous El Paseo shopping district, exudes a palpable sense of history. This 1958 design by seven-time Major champion Gene Sarazen is Palm Desert’ s original golf course and it remains a cherished historic landmark and centerpiece of the community. Adding interest to the game at Shadow Mountain Golf Club, attractive mid-century modern homes line the fairways. Now under ownership that is committed to renovating the highly walkable playing field and restoring its luster, the par-70 layout is a short, sporty, fun and affordable test with three sets of tee markers. Shadow Mountain Golf Club measures a user-friendly 5,062 yards from the front tees, 5,223 yards from the middle, and 5,375 yards from the back markers. The 34-36 configuration features a front nine with three par 3s, five par 4s, and a par 5, and a back nine that has just one par 3 and one par 5 to go along with its par 4s. Players of all ages and ability levels fill up the tee sheets at Shadow Mountain Golf Club. Sarazen’ s routing provides a nice mix of straightaway and dogleg holes. Though the course is short, it isn’ t easy. In fact, it can be frustrating for those who can’ t hit straight shots or control their distances. Out of bounds looms wide of the narrow fairways at Shadow Mountain Golf Club. With over 600 mature palm trees and also some tall pines, the fairways are well defined. Strategically placed sand bunkers protect the greens. A few holes require an aerial entry to reach the putting surface. The small greens tilt from back-to-front and result in many three putts. Senior players gravitate to Shadow Mountain Golf Club because it is short and walkable, but the course should interest anyone looking for a novel golf experience in the Palm Springs region. Practice facilities are limited to warm-up cages and a putting green. “ The Flamingo,” Shadow Mountain Golf Club's exciting new 18-hole putting course, has become "the place" at the club to hangout with a snack and a beverage. When you have a tee time for the main course, play on The Flamingo is free. Don’ t miss out on a tee time at Shadow Mountain Golf Club— this sporty little layout is a historic Palm Springs treasure.

Angeles National Golf Club, a course situated just east of Highway 405 in Sunland, California, is something of a hidden gem in the San Fernando Valley. This desert links-style layout, built by Nicklaus Design group, has received raves from the likes of Will Ferrell and Don Cheadle. The course sits at the edge of the Angeles National Forest. This is a tough test that is enjoyed by skilled players and those who relish playing in a dramatic, natural setting free from housing and other city distractions. Though Angeles National Golf Club is rather flat, the surrounding mountains present a sublime backdrop in the distance. The setting is especially attractive in the late afternoon--chances are you’ ll be reaching for your cell phone to snap a few photos during the round. A couple of lakes come into play and a creek twists through the routing. The fairways at Angeles National Golf Club are somewhat tight. Some 54 bunkers also dot the playing field. Since balls tend to run out quite far on the firm fairway turf, any shot struck slightly askew is in danger of trailing off into the inhospitable desert. Your prospects are often grim if your ball leaves the maintained turf. Angeles National Golf Club has four sets of tee markers. Choosing the correct distance is crucial to your enjoyment as the layout stretches from 4,899 to 7,141 yards. Nicklaus Design laid out a number of fascinating— and tough— holes here. The 2nd hole is a long, double-dogleg par 5. A lake threatens the swing on the two finishing holes. When you get to the greens you’ ll find bentgrass putting surfaces that roll true and are considered a strength of the course. Angeles National Golf Club is known for its conditioning. The club boasts excellent practice facilities (driving range, putting green, chipping area) and a strong professional staff. Though it is not one of the better known courses in Los Angeles County, Angeles National Golf Club is a favorite among players who enjoy a tough challenge while basking in a stunning, pure desert setting.
