Course photo for Redwood Canyon Golf CoursePublic tee-time evidence

Castro Valley, CA

Redwood Canyon Golf Course

First opened for play in 1966, Redwood Canyon Golf Course is laid out among the rolling hills of San Francisco's East Bay. Designed by Bob E. Baldock and Robert L. Baldock, the par-71 course measures just over 6,000 yards from the back tees and has three sets of tees. While it isn't long, there are plenty of challenging holes, as the San Leandro Creek comes into play on almost all of them. Formerly known as Willow Park Golf Course, the name change reflects the location of the course, which is on the southern end of Redwood Canyon, once home to thousands of ancient Redwood trees before they were logged in the 1880s. Narrow fairways and small greens certainly make Redwood Canyon a shotmaker's course. It's more about course management and accuracy than it is length. The most difficult hole on the course is probably the 564-yard. Par-5 ninth. A slight dogleg left, the small green is protected by two large bunkers. A nice finishing stretch culminates with a good risk-reward par-5, a dogleg left that plays under 500 yards from the tips. In addition to the golf course, Redwood Canyon also has a driving range, short-game area, and practice putting green. Golf instruction, which includes individual lessons, "Get Golf Ready" group programs, and junior clinics, is also offered. There is also a well-stocked golf shop in the clubhouse as well as a restaurant and banquet room for special events like meetings and weddings.

Course photo for Union Hills Golf ClubPublic tee-time evidence

Sun City, AZ

Union Hills Golf Club

Perhaps one of the Valley's best kept secrets, Union Hills Golf Club boasts a superb Greg Nash design that not only challenges golfers, but provides great enjoyment as well. Opened in 1974, this semi-private club offers a beautiful, playable layout that's fair to every level of player. The course, which was also designed by Jeff Hardin and Ron Kern, can be stretched to just over 6,900 yards for tournament play, but there are five other sets of tees -- starting at just over 5,500 yards -- to accommodate all skill levels. The course makes its way around two lakes, and it also incorporates a couple of creeks to provide much of the test. The greens are elevated, there are plenty of strategic bunkers, and the fairways are fair, but not extra wide. The signature hole at Union Hills Golf Club is the 14th, a 382-yard, dogleg right par 4 where players must successfully navigate water on the approach to find the green. The finishing stretch is exceptionally strong. It includes the long par-5 16th as well as the 18th, one of the most difficult holes on the course. The finishing hole is straightaway, but it's a pretty good poke to the fairway, and it's 495 yards from the back tees. In addition to the course, Union Hills also offers a driving range, short-game area, and practice putting green. Lessons are also available from the club's golf professionals. Inside the clubhouse, you'll find a well-stocked golf shop with the latest apparel, accessories, and equipment. The clubhouse also features The Garage Bar and Grill.
