Myrtle Beach, SC

Legends Resort

The par 71 Heathland Course, designed by Tom Doak, is a return to the grand “Old Country” traditions of the game. It has been distinctly molded in the image of the British Isles links courses, with holes reminiscent of familiar links like St. Andrews, and lesser-known gems like Lahinch and Cruden Bay. Most of the holes are without high vegetation, providing a visual presentation like no other course in the area. The challenge and difficulty of this course come primarily from the unobstructed breeze that wafts constantly over the course, and the strategically placed bunkers and lush, deep rough that closely border all fairways. Many of the greenside bunkers are deep and require creative shots to make an escape. Rated one of the “Top 10 New Resort Courses in the World” by GOLF Magazine in 1990, Heathland’s design allows players of all ability levels to “step back in time.”

Potters Park Golf Course

Old munis are often beloved places to play, and such is the case with Potter’ s Park Golf Course in the City of Hamilton, Ohio. This classic design is fun for golfers of all skill levels and provides one of the best value golf experiences in southwest Ohio. Golf has been played on the site since 1927. Potter’ s Park Golf Course, which spreads out over 100 housing-free acres, has been city-owned and operated from day one. The short and sporty test boasts an impressive history, as, most notably, 14-year-old Jack Nicklaus triumphed in the Tri-State High School Invitational here in 1954 and carded a 64 in doing so. A unique par-69 layout, Potter’ s Park Golf Course’ s features a front nine that follows a standard par-36 formula with two par 3s and two par 5s, and a short, par-33 back nine that has?three par 3s?and six par 4s. Players can choose between three sets of tee markers: 4,256 yards from the forward tee box, 5,086 from the middle, and 5,354 from the back markers. Potter’ s Park Golf Course has old-style character with a mix of tree-lined uphill and downhill holes and straightaway and dogleg holes. Water enters the fray on five holes. The longer front nine is the tougher side. Most of the greens at Potter’ s Park Golf Course are small, round and fairly flat. While the playing field has only a few sand traps, the bunkers have recently been redone and they are situated in strategic locations. Many players opt to walk Potter’ s Park Golf Course, as the only challenge is a couple of steep hills. If you prefer to drive, the facility has a new fleet of carts. Practice facilities at Potter’ s Park Golf Courseare limited to a putting green. The rather spartan clubhouse features a modest golf shop and a snack area where you can get hotdogs and other items. There’ s indoor seating and an outdoor patio. The course is beautiful in fall but closes for the season when the weather worsens. For an affordable tee time on a pleasing, picturesque, historic layout that dates back to the 1920s, don’ t miss out on a tee time at Potter's Park Golf Course in Hamilton.

Location is an important aspect in the creation of a great golf course, however the architect's ability to blend the course with the surrounding greenery is equally significant. Once every ten years I get to design a great golf course. Royal Niagara is what I believe to be truly great."
