Willow Creek Golf & Country Club

Willow Creek Golf & Country Club is a beautiful 18-hole daily fee golf course in Mt. Sinai on Long Island. This ClubCorp-managed club, located inland near the north shore of the island, may be considered a hidden gem, but it has had a devoted following ever since it opened in 2005. Designed by course architect Stephen Kay, Willow Creek Golf & Country Club perennially appears on Golf Advisor’ s list of the Top Courses in New York State. Kay created a resort-style layout that reminds many players of a lush Florida golf course. The course, adorned with an abundance of willow trees, rewards accuracy with a wide variety of elevations and hazards. Water features enter the fray on 12 holes and play a prominent role in the aesthetics and strategy of the layout. Willow Creek Golf & Country Club features five sets of tee markers that provide good looks at the mostly generous fairways. Nearly 100 bunkers also serve to lend definition to the holes and help defend par. The short par-3 2nd hole provides the first clue that Kay used sand prolifically at Willow Creek Golf & Country Club. The most challenging hole of the round is the monstrous, straightaway par-5 9th, a full 570 yards from the tips with water looming on both sides of the fairway. For sheer fun, nothing at Willow Creek Golf & Country Club beats the signature par-3 16th hole with its island-like green surrounded on three sides by water. Overall, the greens are large with noticeable undulation, and the club likes to keep them running moderately fast. The entire routing weaves around houses in a gated community. Walking is not permitted early in the day. Practice facilities include a driving range and putting greens by the range and the first tee. The clubhouse has a pro shop and a restaurant. Willow Creek Golf & Country Club is a fun challenge for golfers of various skill levels. Don't delay when you see a choice tee time--they go fast at this friendly Long Island playing field.

Gurnee, IL

Bittersweet Golf Club

There`s a lot to be said for being considered by many to be the "hardest golf course on the North Shore". It can be a marvelous moniker if your typical player is Tiger Woods. But Bittersweet Golf Club`s bittersweet reputation actually worked against it with many Chicagoland golfers over the last decade. Its testing layout, relatively narrow target areas, fairways sloping toward an abundance of wetlands and large, deep greens were designed for single-digit handicappers, chasing some of us higher-handicappers away. "Just too hard," they said. Yardages and Ratings; Black - 6754 - 73.3/135; White - 6346 - 71.7/134; Green - 5614 - 68.4/125
