Jean, NV

Primm Valley Golf Club - Lakes Course

The Desert course opened in May 1998, this course features desert landscaping, providing a stark contrast to the almost tropical Lakes course. Somewhat more demanding of the player`s ability, it measures 7,131 yards and a par of 72. The course is accented with palm and mesquite trees, colorful cactus and desert wildflowers to give it a true desert feeling. Where water was used on the Lakes Course, vast stretches of waste bunkers border the fairways on seven holes of the Desert Course. Water does come into play on five holes and narrow fairways with elevation changes and well-bunkered large greens will test even the best players.

Quail Brook Golf Course

Quail Brook Golf Course, a facility managed by the Somerset County Park Commission, is one of the top public courses in Central New Jersey. Widely considered a jewel among the five courses in the county system, it has appeared multiple times on Golf Advisor's list of the Top Courses in New Jersey. Designed by the golf course architecture firm of Ault, Clark, and Associates in 1982, this parkland-style layout has a well-earned reputation for excellent conditions and good value. Quail Brook Golf Course is challenging but playable. It’ s a tale of two contrasting nines. Though the round starts with a par 5 rated as the hardest hole on the course, the front nine rambles on gently rolling terrain and gives players a break compared to the tight and hilly back nine. The entire layout sports intriguing variety. While trees line the fairways and strategically placed bunkers guard the greens,?Quail Brook's degree of difficulty on any given day largely depends on the thickness and height of the rough and native grasses that blanket the turf beyond the fairways and around the putting surfaces. Quail Brook Golf Course’ s greens are medium size, fairly flat, and receptive. Players can stroke putts with confidence. Four sets of tee markers provide appropriately differentiated challenges between 4,994 yards and 6,630 yards. Many players say Quail Brook Golf Course plays long because of its hilly terrain. Those hills, along with some sizable gaps between holes on the back nine, make the golf grounds quite tough to walk. Practice facilities at Quail Brook Golf Course include a driving range, a sand bunker at the range, and a putting green. The spartan clubhouse has a rather basic golf shop and lacks a restaurant. The only snacks available come from a couple of vending machines. Even without any frills, the highly regarded Quail Brook Golf Course is a very popular tee time that makes for a memorable experience in Central New Jersey.

Course photo for Rolling Oaks Golf CoursePublic access under review

Barron, WI

Rolling Oaks Golf Course

Rolling Oaks was constructed in 1980 and opened in July of 1981 as a 9 hole public course with visions of adding another 9 holes in the future. That future arrived with the spring of 1999 when course architect Todd Severud of Rice Lake rerouted three of the original nine holes and produced an impressive 18 hole tract. The course intertwines a links format on a few holes where native grasses serve as hazards to snare off center shots, compared to other holes where fairways and greens are framed by majestic oaks. More than half of the course consists of doglegs forcing the player to shape his shots off the teeing area. Sand traps are used sparingly allowing the natural landscape to present her own brand of challenges. On still other holes, marshes, wetlands, ponds and streams along with the ever present hardwoods produce a truly challenging golfing experience. Rolling Oaks is quickly building a reputation as one of the better daily fee golf experiences in western Wisconsin. Where ever you are from and whatever your level of play, we are sure you will find our club welcoming, enjoyable and invigorating. The tree-lined, wooded fairways, unique water hazards, native grasses, and large gently contoured greens await you.

Course photo for Talamore Golf ResortPublic tee-time evidence

Southern Pines, NC

Talamore Golf Resort

North Carolina’ s Pinehurst/Southern Pines golf mecca abounds with quality golf courses, but one that stands out from among the pack is Talamore Golf Resort. Many local and visiting golfers rate this 1991 Rees Jones design in Southern Pines as their favorite Pinehurst-area layout for its winning combination of playability and challenge, thrilling elevation changes, and excellent playing conditions. Talamore Golf Resort has been a fixture on Golf Advisor’ s list of the Top Courses in North Carolina and it has also appeared on Golf Advisor’ s honor roll of the Top 25 Course Conditions in the United States. Jones made his mark in Pinehurst with his very tough No. 7 course for Pinehurst Resort. With its dramatic elevation changes, Talamore Golf Resort bears some resemblance to that former top-100 course but it is more fun to play for golfers of ordinary ski levels and not nearly as severe a test. Even better, tee times are far less expensive at Talamore Golf Resort. When the course first opened, it was a media sensation because it famously used llamas as caddies. The llamas have long been retired from those duties, but they can still be seen in an area by the 14th hole. Talamore Golf Resort doesn’ t need any gimmicks, though. This par-71 course that maxes out at over 7,00 yards can humble the very best players, and yet, with five sets of tee markers and an additional hybrid option, it’ s also manageable for everyone. The forward markers play at 4,977 yards. Jones’ s trademark containment mounding on the fairways also helps with course playability. Recent projects to remove trees, reduce the rough, restore the greens to their original size and shape, and pare down excess bunkering while adding some highly aesthetic stacked sod-wall bunkers have given Talamore Golf Resort even more luster. While many holes throughout the layout are flat, others rise and fall precipitously. The highest and lowest points on the golf course vary by 150 feet. Factor in some of the smoothest putting surfaces in Pinehurst/Southern Pines, and it’ s easy to see why Talamore Golf Resort enjoys such a devoted following. Practice facilities include a driving range that is equipped with TopTracer technology, a chipping area with a sand bunker, and a putting green. The clubhouse features a golf shop, locker rooms, and a restaurant. Make your tee time before all the slots fill up— Talamore Golf
