Gunter, TX

The Bridges Golf Club

Among the top 15 golf courses in Texas in 2020 according to GolfPass, The Bridges Golf Club is a beautiful semi-private facility with a terrific golf course designed by renowned architect Jeffrey Brauer and major championship winner Fred Couples. The courses, which measures 7,612 yards from the back tees with a rating of 77.7, opened in 2008 and has been receiving rave reviews since. The course got its name because it winds its way through "The Bridges" of Preston's Crossing, the neighborhood where the course is located. The holes are fairly wide open as wind is often a factor. Bunkers are beautifully sculpted and water comes into play on a number of holes. Greens are fairly large and elevated with plenty of bunkers and other protection, but generally fairly accessible. Fortunately, there are five sets of tees, starting at 5,193 yards, making it player friendly for all. The no. 1 handicap hole is the par-5 third, which is 581 yards. But perhaps more daunting is the finishing hole, the 645-yard 18th, which is the no. 2 handicap hole on the course. A lake comes into play from tee to green on this sharp dogleg right (it hugs the right side all the way), where the layup isn't even easy. Going for it in two is pretty much impossible, unless you're one of the best players in the world. Practice facilities include a driving range and putting green. Lessons are also available. The Bridges magnificent clubhouse includes a well-stocked golf shop and The Masters Bar & Grill, which is open for breakfast, lunch and early dinner.

Course photo for Coyote Ridge Golf ClubPublic tee-time evidence

Carrollton, TX

Coyote Ridge Golf Club

Coyote Ridge Golf Club, which opened in 1999, is one of the most popular and intriguing courses in the expansive Dallas Metroplex. Located to the north of Dallas in Carrollton, this George B. Williams design features two contrasting nines that make for a fun and challenging day of golf. The front nine winds through a residential community on breezy, open terrain. Water enters the fray on several holes. For drama at Coyote Ridge Golf Club, it’ s hard to beat the 7th hole, a par 3 that drops 70 feet from the back tee boxes to a wide, undulating green fronted by water. Although the front nine returns to the clubhouse, you’ ll drive about a quarter of a mile on a path as you make your way to the back nine. (Coyote Ridge Golf Course has a lot of gaps between holes, so it isn’ t conducive to walking.) Unlike the front nine, the back nine is treelined and somewhat narrow. There’ s more elevation changes here, too, as the Coyote Ridge Golf Club playing field incorporates what formerly was an old rock quarry by the Elm Fork Trinity River. Oaks, pecans and elms, plus seasonal flowers and natural grasses, ramp up the beauty and challenge. The back nine reveals its character right off the bat on the long, dogleg-right par-5 10th. The 17th hole, a dogleg-left par 4, plays beside the river. Coyote Ridge Golf Course is a tough test that requires prudent course management. Keeping your ball in play is critical--you’ ll want to resist the temptation to hit your driver on several holes. The course has nice practice facilities and an impressive 27,000-square-foot clubhouse with locker rooms and a grill restaurant where you can grab a meal and drinks and watch the day’ s top sporting event. It’ s easy to see why Coyote Ridge Golf Club in Carrollton is a favorite tee time of North Texas golfers.

Course photo for Lions Municipal Golf CoursePublic tee-time evidence

Austin, TX

Lions Municipal Golf Course

In keeping with the long tradition of Austin Golf, Lions Municipal Golf Course has served it's citizens since 1934 and has long been the city's most popular course. Constructed originally by the Lions Club in 1928, Lions has hosted notable golfers, including Ben Hogan, Byron Nelson and of course Tom Kite and Ben Crenshaw. While "old muni" has changed over the years it remains a quality test but very playable course. Even through the course would be considered short by today's standards, 6001 yards, it's relatively narrow tree lined fairways and small greens provides a challenge to even the longest hitters.
