Elgin, IL

Elgin Country Club

Of interest, the Cloudman's and the Hamlin's had summer homes at Lake Geneva and observed golf at the Lake Geneva Country Club [The club was formed in 1895]. We understand that the four or five of them made a sort of a three-hole course behind the State Hospital that they used for practice. There were no greens but perhaps they put several tin cans in the ground. This might have started in 1898, but it never made the three newspapers. This was not a country club. This head start also might help explain their early golf successes in tournaments.

Evanston Golf Club

Evanston Golf Club, founded in 1898, occupies 150 acres nestled in Chicago’s historic North Shore. Pioneering Scottish designer Donald Ross personally crafted our course nearly a century ago, and we’ve taken care to preserve his design while carefully updating the course over the years to suit the modern game. While we’re proud to provide a world-class golfing experience, our club offers much more than fairways and greens. Our unparalleled blend of rich history, modern amenities, family activities and a truly welcoming atmosphere makes us a premier club for golfers and non-golfers alike. Our club offers tennis and paddle, along with shooting sports in the winter and family-friendly events all year long. Our clubhouse is the perfect venue for receptions and special events, and members and guests enjoy fine dining on our spacious patio overlooking the course. The new Evanston pool complex – scheduled to open in 2015 – will be among the finest in the Chicago area. Our facilities and amenities get plenty of attention, but what truly sets Evanston Golf Club apart is our relaxed, family-friendly and diverse atmosphere. Children have grown up and made memories here for generations, and women were encouraged to join and golf from the day we opened our doors. Our events & activities make sure members of all ages and interests are engaged and having fun throughout the year.

Evanston, IL

Evanston Wilmette Golf Course

In 1919, when the North Shore Channel was new, and the area surrounding it was largely unusable, some progressive and creative leaders of Evanston and Wilmette joined together with a vision for a golf course — not just any golf course, but one tailored to wind through our communities and provide a unique public golf experience. Situated on land owned by the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District, the course was also originally known as the Peter Jans Golf Course, after an enthusiastic golfer who was responsible for organizing support for the course. Jans felt that people didn’t take up golf due to its expense, and wanted to improved access to the game. The course is managed by the Evanston Wilmette Golf Course Association, a volunteer organization composed of golfers and neighbors who want to preserve and improve this unique and special green space in our community.
