Wolf Creek Golf Course

Since 2001 Wolf Creek has earned a reputation as one of the toughest golf tracks in the Atlanta Metro area. Wolf Creek boasts a 7028 yard par 72 championship layout with bent grass greens. In the winter Wolf Creek is the only public course in the south metro area that oversseeds all the fairways and tee boxes which is just one of the reasons why Golf Digest Selected Wolf Creek as the best course near Hartsfield Jackson Airport. The Mike Young Designs course incorporates both low flatlands holes, bordering many wetland areas, and holes with dramatic elevation changes. Wolf Creek has four sets of tees to accommodate players of all skill levels. A practice range and practice green allow for serious work on your golf game or just a warm-up before your round. Woodstock, GA

Towne Lake Hills Golf Club

Towne Lake Hills Golf Club is a highly regarded, championship-caliber course and focal point of a planned community in Woodstock, Georgia. Located some 35 miles north of Atlanta, this beautiful playing field was carved out of woodlands by renowned course architect Arthur Hills in 1994. Over the years Towne Lake Hills Golf Club has earned a reputation for its outstanding course conditions and for giving players plenty of bang for their buck. With four regular sets of tee markers ranging from 4,984 yards to 6,784 yards, plus new sets of family and junior tees, Towne Lake Hills Golf Club offers a manageable distance for players of all ages and ability levels. Skilled players, especially, gravitate to the club from all over the Atlanta area because of the challenge it presents from the back markers. Towne Lake Hills Golf Club, which features Bermuda fairways and bentgrass greens, spreads out of markedly rolling terrain with some pronounced up and down elevation changes. You can expect awkward lies and stances as the terrain always seems to be moving. Arthur Hills created an intriguing combination of fun and challenging holes. In addition to a couple of ponds that enter the fray on a total of three holes, a few ravines and natural areas threaten your swing and demand forced carries. Towne Lake Hills Golf Club is known for its stern par 4s and its four very different par 5s. Two par 5s in particular— the reachable downhill 5th and the long 18th— illustrate this track’ s balance between fun and challenge. Towne Lake Hills Golf Club’ s greens are nicely varied. Some of the putting surfaces are large with multiple tiers. Note that the course is not walker-friendly because of the steep nature of the terrain and the large gaps between some holes. If you want to warm up before your tee time, the club driving range and pitching and chipping areas are situated together, while the putting green is by the clubhouse. The clubhouse is home to a well-stocked pro shop and a separately owned tavern-style restaurant that is typically open from morning ’ til evening. It’ s easy to see why Towne Lake Hills Golf Club enjoys such high esteem and fills up its tee time slot fast— it’ s one of the finest golf facilities in North Atlanta.

Course photo for RiverPines Golf CoursePublic access under review

Alpharetta, GA

RiverPines Golf Course

Certainly one of the best public courses in the Atlanta area, RiverPines Golf Course has a terrific championship layout rated along the banks of the Chattahoochee River with terrific views and splendid holes. Located near Alpharetta, the par 70 course plays 6,602 yards from the back set of tees. Opened in 1992, it was designed by prolific golf course architect Denis Griffiths. The golf course has lush, Bermuda fairways and bentgrass greens. The golf course, which has four other sets of tees, starting at just 4,291 yards, has tree-lined fairways, streams, ponds, bright white sand bunkers and rolling topography. The course has just two par-5 holes -- the eighth and the 17th -- but there are some par 4s that feel like par 5s. The no. 1 handicap hole is the 447-yard fourth, where golfers must navigate a lake off the tee, then keep it in between the trees to find the green on the approach shot. RiverPines also has a nice collection of par 3s, with all of them playing 174 yards or longer. In addition to the championship layout, there's also a par-3 course for guests to enjoy. The 951-yard links-style layout boasts tricky, undulating greens, and is a great workout for your short game. Practice facilities at RiverPines are also top notch, with a full driving range and target greens, chipping green, practice bunker, and 10,000-square foot putting green. Individual instruction and group clinics are also offered. RiverPines also has a well-stocked golf shop.

Course photo for Fox Creek Golf ClubPublic tee-time evidence

Smyrna, GA

Fox Creek Golf Club

If you’ re looking for a fun, executive-style golf course in the Atlanta Metro area, follow the locals and make a tee time to play at Fox Creek Golf Club. This beautiful par-62 layout abuts Legacy Golf Links, another popular executive layout, in the historic city of Smyrna, Georgia. The facilities are just three miles from Truist Park, the home of the Atlanta Braves. Fox Creek Golf Club offers fun, affordable and quicker rounds on a playing field that is geared for golfers of all skill levels— it gives you excellent bang for your buck. Course architect John Lafoy laid out the course in 1985 on a site that remains enveloped by towering Georgia pines and delightfully free of course-side buildings of any sort. With three sets of tee markers, Fox Creek Golf Club extends from 3,153 yards to 3,802 yards. The routing features a par-32 front nine with five par 3s, three par 4s, and a par 5, and a par-30 back nine with six par 3s and three par 4s. None of the par 4s tops 360 yards and the par 5 maxes out at just under 400 yards. What makes Fox Creek Golf Club fun is its varied and picturesque mix of straightaway and dogleg holes that ramble on rolling, wooded terrain. A creek crosses the fairways of six holes, but unless you top your shots, it shouldn’ t come into play. A few holes feature bunkers. Fox Creek Golf Club is a welcoming and inclusive place to play that attracts players with widely varying golf experience. The club tries to keep rounds under three hours for the first couple of hours of the day. Fox Creek Golf Club’ s practice facilities include an expansive driving range (hitting is off of grass from Thursday through Sunday), a chipping green, and a putting green. The pro shop is somewhat minimalist and the only food items available are hotdogs, basic snacks and beer that can be enjoyed under a covered pavilion. Fox Creek Golf Club is a fun, sporty, and bargain-priced executive course that attracts golfers far and wide in the Atlanta metro area.

Course photo for Polo Golf & Country ClubPublic access under review

Cumming, GA

Polo Golf & Country Club

Located in the wooded area of northern Atlanta, the 6,699-yard, par-72 golf course at Polo Golf & Country Club was designed by award-winning architect Joe Lee, who has designed more than 250 courses in his career. Lee believed that “golf should be enjoyable and not a chore” to play, a philosophy that is clearly evident at Polo. Throughout the course, golfers are presented with straightforward shot options as everything is laid out in plain sight. Lee wanted golfers to see what is in front of them so every holes has a clear route from tee to green with no hidden hazards or blind spots.
