Sugar Hill, GA

Sugar Hill Golf Club

Sugar Hill Golf Club, located some 40 miles north of Atlanta near Lake Sidney Lanier, is the town of Sugar Hill’ s popular municipal course. Offering a fun game that will put your game to the test, it's no wonder Sugar Hill Golf Course draws players from all around. Course architect Willard Byrd, a designer best known for several courses in Myrtle Beach as well as Atlanta Country Club, laid out the playing field in 1992. Few munis in the country boast as appealing a combination of entertaining holes and scenic vistas. Sugar Hill Golf Club is a short, dramatic, and quite challenging course. It’ s a friendly facility that invites you to “ come play one of the most challenging courses in Georgia.” The layout rambles on hilly, heavily treed terrain and boasts spectacular vistas of the course and the wooded countryside. Sugar Hill Golf Club offers a peaceful escape into a pure golf realm, as there are no houses lining the fairways. Instead, the playing field features tight, tree-lined fairways that look intimidating. The intimidation is real. Lots of hills and mounds present a scene of constantly moving terrain. The recipe for success is placement over power here. If your ball is slicing or hooking, it will likely ride the slopes of the fairways and drift into trees. Even when your ball remains in the short grass, you're likely to face uneven lies and stances at Sugar Hill Golf Course. The round starts with a dogleg that sets the tone. Numerous doglegs, some of which are quite unique, flow with the terrain and hook around stands of mature trees. A number of water hazards also factor into play. On both the 4th and 12th, a pair of par 3s, you must fly a lake to reach the green. On the 12th, you must not only carry the lake, but also a large bunker that blankets the front of the putting surface. Notwithstanding the challenge it presents, Sugar Hill Golf Club is a test players of all skill levels can manage because it is not a long course. With its four sets of tee markers, the course can play as short as 4,231 yards and as long as 6,522 yards. Playing from the proper tee boxes will allow everyone to have fun on this exciting course that’ s full of varied, surprising holes. Practice facilities include a driving range and putting green. Sugar Hill Golf Club features a full service bar and grill. A tee time at this popular muni in Gwinnett County will put your game to

Atlanta, GA

Browns Mill Golf Course

Browns Mill Golf Course was originally designed by George Cobb, designer of the par 3 course at Augusta National. Conveniently located, Browns Mill is only 10 minutes from downtown Atlanta. The 18-hole, open design course measures 6500 yards. The front nine offers three small lakes that will occasionally grab a wayward ball. The signature hole on the front nine is a 435-yard par-4 with a thirty degree incline from tee to green. Many golfers walk away from this one with a bogey and a smile. The signature hole on the back is a 213-yard par-3 with some incline. This is followed by two 400-yard par-4s that will test your driving accuracy. Practice on the chipping greens, driving range, and putting greens. Buy your favorite brand name merchandise at the onsite Pro Shop.

Acworth, GA

Cobblestone Golf Course

Cobblestone Golf Course, a daily fee facility owned by Cobb County, is one of the premier municipal courses in the country. This beauty by Ken Dye (no relation to Pete Dye) is as busy and popular a course as you’ ll find in the Atlanta area. Located on the south shore of Lake Acworth in Atlanta’ s northern suburbs, Cobblestone Golf Course began racking up honors and national attention as soon as it opened in 1993, and it has only improved since its full renovation in 2010. Dye carved playing corridors through thick woodlands on a peninsula of the lake. Though each nine at Cobblestone Golf Club features spectacular stretches right on the lake, most of the holes are tight with trees on both sides. There’ s a lot of movement in the ground here. Cobblestone Golf Course is quite hilly with frequent elevation changes. You’ ll also encounter a few severe doglegs. The undulating 2nd hole with its two levels of fairway is the hardest test of the round. No doubt the coolest holes at Cobblestone Golf Course are the lake holes. The 4th, 5th, 15th and 16th use the peninsula setting on Lake Acworth to maximum effect. Keep in mind this is not an easy test of golf. In addition to its narrow playing corridors, Cobblestone Golf Course also features thick rough and firm greens that don’ t take a lot of spin. How players handle the difficulty can impact pace of play. The course spaces tee times out in 10-minute intervals and strives for 4:20 rounds. Practice facilities include a driving green, chipping green and practice putting green. The expanded clubhouse offers a grill-style restaurant and bar with a few outdoor tables. There’ s a reason why a tee time at Cobblestone Golf Course is so coveted in the Atlanta Metro area— you’ ll be in for a memorable experience from start to finish at this stunning layout on the banks of Lake Acworth.

Milton, GA

White Columns Country Club

Guarded by towering pine trees and featuring countless elevation changes, the Tom Fazio-designed golf course at White Columns Country Club has consistently been one of Atlanta’s top golf courses. The course has a distinctly traditional feel and clearly shows what a talented designer can do with a great piece of land. Fazio, widely regarded as the top modern day golf course architect, utilized the naturally undulating terrain to create a challenging golf course that is also playable thanks to wide Bermuda fairways and expansive Crenshaw Bentgrass greens. Impeccable playing conditions, contrasting transitional areas, and spectacular vistas from elevated tees and greens enhance the design, which ranges from 5,087 yards to 7,053 yards. As a testament to its quality, White Columns Country Club has hosted the Women's U.S. Open Qualifier, the Georgia Women's Golf Association's (GWGA) Amateur Golf Tournament and the USGA Junior Girl's Qualifier, among others. If you enjoy competitive play, there are several golf leagues for men, women and seniors at White Columns that play on a regular basis, including the Men’s Golf Association, The Ladies Golf Association, a Couples group, a Seniors group and the Under 10 Handicappers group. White Columns also offers a driving range with multiple hitting areas, two putting greens and its Golf Learning Center for club fittings, golf instruction and video analysis to help perfect your game.
