Grapes and golf make for a great combination at The Course at Wente Vineyards, a beautiful but very challenging championship golf course in the Livermore Valley. Ever since opening in the late 1990s, this upscale daily fee facility located 35 miles east of San Francisco has been a popular Bay Area tee time thanks to its private club feel, reputation for superb course maintenance, and highly intriguing layout. The Course at Wente Vineyards has appeared frequently on Golf Advisor’ s list of the Top Courses in California. It is notable for being Greg Norman’ s first design in the United States. Norman simply couldn’ t resist the property. Surrounded by golden hills and well removed from any other development, The Course at Wente Vineyards is an amenity of an 1883-vintage winery that holds the distinction of being the oldest continuously operating family-owned winery in the country. The playing field rambles amidst three distinct topographies— native woodlands, mature vineyards and hills of natural grasslands— with more than 200 feet of elevation change between its highest and lowest spots. The rolling hills come alive with elevated tee shots and panoramic views revealing the surrounding countryside. The Course at Wente Vineyards not only mesmerizes players with its gorgeous scenery, it also offers a stern challenge that tests even the most skilled golfers. During two of the three years that the course hosted a Nationwide Tour (now Korn Ferry Tour) event, it produced the Tour’ s highest scoring average of the season. Big bunkers add definition to the fairways and serve as targets. Although the tee shot landing areas are generous, accuracy is needed on approach shots into the layout’ s sloping greens. Due to the?elevation changes of the golf grounds, players face some blind shots. Norman has said the short par-4 2nd, with its fairway flanked on both sides by sycamore and oak trees, is his favorite hole. The back nine begins high on a ridge that yields breathtaking vistas. One of the coolest moments at The Course at Wente Vineyards comes when you make the drive up the dramatic, switchback-filled cart path that leads from the 9th green to the 10th tee. If you appreciate golf course architecture and the strategic intricacies of the game, make a tee time to play Shadow Ridge Golf Club when you are in Palm Springs. The course, which opened in 2000, is the star amenity of the Marriott Shadow Ridge Resort in Palm Desert, though you don’ t have to stay at the resort to play here. Shadow Ridge Golf Club was the first American design by six-time major winner Nick Faldo. Lee Schmidt and Brian Curley assisted Faldo on this stunningly beautiful course that is considered one of Faldo’ s best creations. Over the years Shadow Ridge Golf Club has racked up a slew of honors. Not only has it been a fixture on lists of the best Palm Springs layouts, it has appeared on the honor roll of top resort courses in the country and top public courses in California. Faldo wanted the playing field to sport a unique look. He took inspiration from the great sand-belt courses of Australia, notably, Kingston Heath and Royal Melbourne. Set against the sublime backdrop of the Santa Rosa Mountains, Shadow Ridge Golf Club’ s big fairways are lined by large, boldly shaped bunkers and tall native fescue grasses. The contrasting colors present an aesthetically appealing scene and vividly define the holes. Though a few holes?feature water, it’ s Faldo's bunkering and green complexes?that give Shadow Ridge Golf Course its bite. The sand traps are large and deep with tall faces— Sir Nick has called them “ menacing” — and most importantly, strategically placed. Faldo famously stated that in addition to giving the playing field a unique look, he “ sought to design a course that not only tests a player’ s skill, but also his imagination and character.” Shadow Ridge Golf Club may be a resort course but it doesn't?play like a resort course.The layout features an abundance of doglegs and approach shots that are full of intimidation. It's?a challenge not only to reach the heavily bunkered greens, but also to hold the large undulating putting surfaces (beware of false fronts), as balls tend to drift off into closely mown collection areas. Options abound for players who have a creative short game. Less skilled players can take some solace because the game here is not about forced carries,?especially if you play from a distance that?suits your?skill level. Ojai, CA

Ojai Valley Inn

The world-class Ojai Country Club was one of the first great golf courses in Southern California. Designed and originally built in 1923 under the direction of George C. Thomas, Jr. and Billy Bell, the course was hailed as "a marvel of golfing architecture." Thomas, who also designed courses at the Riviera, Bel-Air and Los Angeles country clubs, had two initial considerations for the Ojai course: "...that the average golfer could enjoy his round without too great a penalty, and that a test must be afforded requiring the low-handicap man to play fine golf in order to secure pars." In its eight decades, the golf course has been made even more famous by the pros and celebrities who have chosen it for exhibition play and competition. Jimmy Demaret and Doug Sanders have been resident pros, while Bing Crosby, Bob Hope, Will Smith, Kevin Costner, Michael Douglas and a host of Hollywood stars have visited over the years to play the course. The Inn has hosted seven Senior PGA TOUR events that brought legendary superstars such as Arnold Palmer, Lee Trevino, Gary Player, Tom Weiskopf, Chi Chi Rodriguez, Ben Crenshaw and others to challenge our historic course and two EMC2 Golf Skills Challenges, as seen on NBC. The 18-hole golf course and the greens were considerably toughened in 1988 by famous course designer Jay Morrish. At 6,292 yards from the blue tees, it is a par 70 course with six par 4's over 400 yards, and three par 3's of over 200 yards. In 1999, this luxury golf resort reintroduced the "Lost Holes." Two original golf holes designed by George C. Thomas, Jr. in 1923 were lost when the course was redesigned following WWII. These two holes have been restored and brought back within their original layout. We hope you find the course to be challenging and a rewarding golfing experience no matter what your level of play.
