Fairfield, CA

Rancho Solano Golf Course

Designed by Gary Roger Baird, Rancho Solano celebrated its Opening Day in March 1990. It is nestled in the hills of Fairfield and offers well-manicured fairways, large, tiered greens and challenging holes for every level of golfer. Water is a factor on holes 2, 3, 4, and 5 on the front nine and holes 11, 12 and 14 on the back nine. Despite being an open course, club selection is important, especially on the challenging par 3’s. Rancho Solano is known for having some of the largest greens on Northern California courses. Two of the most challenging holes are on the back nine. Hole 11 is a par 4, but club selection is important because a long drive could end up in the lake. A carefully placed second shot onto the green, which hugs the water’s edge, is not as easy as it looks. Sand traps exist on the backside of the green should a golfer decide to extend the margin of safety. The large green adds to the challenge of scoring a par. Hole 12 is a picturesque par 3. Another small lake guards the front of the green and sand traps protect the back of the green. All tee boxes require the golfer to hit over the lake; there is no room to bail out on the right and very little room to consider a shot to the left. Getting on in one is satisfying; scoring par remains a challenge because of another trademark ‘large, two-tiered’ green. Finishing your round with a birdie on the 18th hole is possible if you maneuver beyond the undulating fairway. This hole`s green provides one last challenge on Rancho Solano`s golf course.

Course photo for Richter Park Golf CoursePublic access under review

Danbury, CT

Richter Park Golf Course

One of Connecticut's best public plays, Richter Park is a championship test that has played host to many top amateur events over the years. The course, which opened in 1971 and was designed by Edward C. Ryder, staged the American Junior Golf Association championships four times, with the last coming in 2020, as well as the Met Public Links Championship (2013) and Connecticut Pub Links Championship (2009). The par-72 golf course, which is laid out over 180 hilly acres, plays nearly 6,800 yards from the tips. Lined by mature hardwoods, which are especially beautiful in the fall, the course has plenty of elevation change. The West Lake Reservoir borders seven holes on the front, with Boggs Pond coming into play on the signature par-5 12th, which has a peninsula green. The back nine is hillier than the front, and ends with the no. 2 handicap hole, the 18th, a 438-yard dogleg right par 4. While the course is certainly challenging, there are four sets of tees, starting at 4,922 yards. Besides the course, Richter Park, which was developed by the city of Danbury, has excellent practice facilities that include a driving range, short-game area and practice putting green. Individual and group lessons for adults as well as juniors are also offered. Inside the clubhouse is a fully stocked golf shop with plenty of clothes and equipment. There are also locker rooms as well as the grill room and patio for casual dining. There is also the Caf? on the Green for formal dining and catering.

Shellman Bluff, GA

Sapelo Hammock Golf Club

Taking advantage of Georgia's scenic coastal landscape, Sapelo Hammock Golf Club offers a golf course that's both challenging and serene. The golf course, which opened in 2011 and was designed by Rusty Simmons, is rated more than 4 1/2 stars on GolfPass, and has also been rated as one of the top courses in Georgia by GolfPass readers. The layout weaves its way through marshes and live oak trees, covered in Spanish moss, providing plenty of obstacles along the way. At nearly 6,900 yards from the back tees, the course is a good test, even for long hitters, but four more sets of tees, starting at just 4,753 yards, make it playable by all. The golf course at Sapelo Hammock has a strong collection of par 5s. The no. 1 handicap hole is the 542-yard ninth. Though it's not particularly long -- and it is the longest hole on the course -- there's plenty of trouble with wetlands coming into play off the tee and on the approach, where the fairway tends to tighten up against the backdrop of trees on the left of this dogleg right. The course ends with a 500-yard par 5, a good risk-reward hole that. Brings in a creek that must be carried by anyone looking to go for this green in two. In addition to the course, Sapelo Hammock Golf Club has excellent practice facilities that include a driving range, short-game area and practice putting green. Lessons are available from the professional staff. And inside the clubhouse is a well-stocked golf shop and restaurant that's open every day. This semi-private club also offers limited onside accommodations for anyone looking to book a stay-and-play package.
