Panama City Beach, FL

Legacy Golf Club

Honoring the wishes of Lela and Charles Hilton, Legacy Golf Club is named in honor of their beloved son "Chip." He started playing daily at age 9 with a genuine love and excitement for the sport. He was on the Bay High School golf team, apprenticing with golf pro-Kenny Lind and made golf his vocation. As a professional golf instructor, he taught his students invaluable life lessons, emphasizing that golf is not a game of perfection but a comeback. He also believed golf was more than just a game; it was full of essential life skills such as patience, perseverance, determination, and overcoming obstacles and setbacks. The golf club, established in 1965, is a championship course with challenging greens designed to test golfers with even the sharpest short-game skills. The fairways are generously sized with lakes and white sand bunkers that fiercely guard the elevated greens. Players should be prepared to use every club in their bag. The golf course is challenging but fair and enjoyable, making it a good test of skill without inciting frustration. Its play ability, enhanced with three sets of tees, has made it one of Florida's most popular tracks. Legacy Golf Club also boasts extensive practice facilities, including a lighted driving range, chipping green, expansive putting green, Executive Course, and Bar and Grille The golf club requires that every golfer have their own golf bag, and follow the dress code: Collared shirts are mandatory, no denim jeans, MUST have tennis shoes, sandals are NOT allowed.

Tampa, FL

Rocky Point Golf Course

Rocky Point is a fine public golf course facility conveniently located within 15-minute drive of Tampa International Airport as well as many luxury hotels in the West Shore and Rocky Point areas. Sand and water come into play often. In fact, the many lakes on the course have become a wildlife habitat as well as a bird sanctuary. A great course for a pleasurable round of golf. The History of Rocky Point Golf CourseAs told by Bob Arnot, staff member of 40 years: In 1911 the Tampa Automobile Club opened for business, making it one of the first golf courses in Florida. In 1942 the club was closed down because of World War II. The Federal Government turned the club into a part of Drew Field. Barracks were built to hold prisoners of war. In 1953 the Government turned the property over to the City of Tampa for $1. Consequently, the City of Tampa leased the course to J.S. “Curly” Hartman for 25 years. Curly and his wife, Merle were from Mason City, Iowa. Rocky Point Golf Course reopened in June of 1954. Merle took over operations when Curly passed in 1957. In December of 1963 a third nine was added. In 1978, after the lease expired the City of Tampa turned over operations to the Tampa Sports Authority. In December of 1981, Mayor Bob Martinez leased 40+ acres of Rocky Point Golf Course to Critikon Corporation for 99 years in return for a 1.2 million dollar redesign. This included the return from 27 holes to 18 holes. The course reopened on March 5, 1983. The new clubhouse was built and opened in July, 1993.

Course photo for East Orange Golf CoursePublic tee-time evidence

Short Hills, NJ

East Orange Golf Course

East Orange Golf Course is a sporty, municipally-owned golf course with a devoted following in Short Hills, New Jersey. Golf on the site, which is near the Garden State Parkway and I-280, dates back to 1926. That’ s when Tom Bendelow, a prolific Scottish-America Golden Age architect (nicknamed ‘ The Johnny Appleseed of American golf’ ), laid out the course. For years the golf grounds were neglected, but Stephen Kay performed a much-needed renovation in 2015 that has revitalized, modernized and improved the playing field while retaining its vintage feel. East Orange Golf Course is a short and fun layout with no houses around. Enveloped by mature trees, the par-70 layout features three sets of tee markers that enable play from as short as 4,725 yards and as long as 5,687 yards. The course is well suited for novices, families, and anyone looking for a shorter test that is quite relaxing. In fact, the flat playing field is largely devoid of trouble other than rough and trees. There are no water hazards on the property and just a few sand traps to help defend par. The greens present some challenges because they are elevated, but they don’ t have any dramatic undulations or slopes. East Orange Golf Course is a very straightforward layout with a few attractive doglegs to lend variety to the game. The course spreads out nicely and is well suited for walking. Chances are you’ ll see players opting to make their way around on foot. Stephen Kay’ s improvements included building two new holes, resodding the greens with a better strain of bentgrass, rebuilding the tee boxes and bunkers, adding a new irrigation system, and creating new practice facilities. For those who like to warm up before their round, East Orange Golf Course has a driving range, chipping green and putting green. The club also boasts a new clubhouse with a rather spartan golf shop and a restaurant. East Orange Golf Course isn’ t the type of course that will challenge low handicap players, but it is a short, attractive, and tranquil layout suitable for all levels of players, and it can be a nice introduction to the game for new players.
