Bedford, OH

Shawnee Hills Golf Course

In 1989, Shawnee Hills in Bedford Reservation expanded to 27 holes, including an 18-hole regulation course and a 9-hole Par 3 course. The original 18 holes were designed by local architect Ben Zink in 1957. Zink, a golf course superintendent at Acacia and Kirtland, designed Berkshire Hills in Chesterland and the former Landerhaven Golf Course in Mayfield Heights. The expansion of the course was designed and constructed by Cleveland Metroparks staff with the exception of "gorge holes" #2 and #3. From the original 9-hole regulation course, only four holes remain intact. Shawnee Hills is the most versatile course in Cleveland Metroparks. Lessons are available and players can practice on the 29-station driving range. Beginners can enhance skills on the sporty Par 3 course. At the 18-hole course, the front nine with its gentle rolling terrain and water hazards has been likened to a "Florida" course. The challenging back nine with its hills and large pines, maples, oaks, and beautiful Deer Lick Creek, is reminiscent of a course in the Carolinas. As you walk down the hill from the #10 green to the #11 tee, take note of the grave site of Mary Egbert. The Egberts farmed the land that most of the course was built on. Mary was one of the Egbert sisters and died at the age of three in 1843. The most difficult hole at Shawnee Hills, and possibly the toughest hole in Cleveland Metroparks, is #4. It is a converted par 5 hole, now a 451 yard uphill, tree-lined, dogleg left par 4.

Deland, FL

Victoria Hills Golf Club

With rolling terrain, elevation change and majestic pines as the backdrop for one gorgeous hole after another, Victoria Hills Golf Club is a favorite for golfers looking to play in central Florida. Considered by many one of Ron Garl's best designs, Victoria Hills Golf Club opened in 2000. It offers contours and movement atypical to the area, giving it a bit of a Carolinas feel. The course, which measures 7,149 yards from the back tees, presents a wide variety of holes with an assortment of doglegs, water features, fairway and greenside bunkers and elevated, undulating greens. There are six sets of tees, starting with the "Community" tees at 4,893 yards, to serve every level of player. While the course certainly has its challenges, it's very playable. The no. 1 handicap hole is the 585-yard par-5 fifth, but there's not a lot of trouble on the hall. For most players, it just requires three well-struck shots to the green. Water does come into play on several holes, including the 13th through 17th. The par-3 seventh, at 227 yards, is another challenging hole on the course. Victoria Hills Golf Club also offers a "mega" practice facility that includes a double-sided driving range as well as several chipping and putting greens. Instruction from the Victoria Hills Golf Academy is also available. And before or after golf, you'll want to spend a little time at Sparrow's Grille, an award winning dining facility that offers a great Sunday brunch as well as regular menu.
