Course architect Carlton Gipson laid out the playing field in 1990 amidst a master-planned community situated some 30 miles southwest of Houston. With four sets of tee markers, the par-72 layout can play as short as 5,290 yards and as long as 6,829 yards. Aquatic penalty areas, in the form of lakes, ponds and a creek, come into play on the majority of tests at Greatwood Golf Club. A number of holes wrap around a centerpiece lake that sits in front of the clubhouse. Lipson’ s layout will get your heart pounding with its forced carries over water, most notably on the monster par-5 18th, which features a final approach to a small island green that also is home to a 100-year-old pecan tree. One nice aspect of Greatwood Golf Club is that it allows players to ease into the round with its two shortest and easiest par 4s right off the bat. Thereafter, the challenge ramps up. Greatwood Golf Club’ s par 3s and par 5s are quite long. Several greens are elevated and tilted from back to front. Practice facilities at Greatwood Golf Club include a driving range, a chipping green, and a putting green.
