Alpharetta, GA

RiverPines Golf Course

Certainly one of the best public courses in the Atlanta area, RiverPines Golf Course has a terrific championship layout rated along the banks of the Chattahoochee River with terrific views and splendid holes. Located near Alpharetta, the par 70 course plays 6,602 yards from the back set of tees. Opened in 1992, it was designed by prolific golf course architect Denis Griffiths. The golf course has lush, Bermuda fairways and bentgrass greens. The golf course, which has four other sets of tees, starting at just 4,291 yards, has tree-lined fairways, streams, ponds, bright white sand bunkers and rolling topography. The course has just two par-5 holes -- the eighth and the 17th -- but there are some par 4s that feel like par 5s. The no. 1 handicap hole is the 447-yard fourth, where golfers must navigate a lake off the tee, then keep it in between the trees to find the green on the approach shot. RiverPines also has a nice collection of par 3s, with all of them playing 174 yards or longer. In addition to the championship layout, there's also a par-3 course for guests to enjoy. The 951-yard links-style layout boasts tricky, undulating greens, and is a great workout for your short game. Practice facilities at RiverPines are also top notch, with a full driving range and target greens, chipping green, practice bunker, and 10,000-square foot putting green. Individual instruction and group clinics are also offered. RiverPines also has a well-stocked golf shop.

Course photo for Spring Valley Golf CoursePublic tee-time evidence

Spring Valley, WI

Spring Valley Golf Course

The course has two distinct and different sides. The first nine, while not having the pines of the second nine to contend with, it not an easy tract. This is not a drive and a wedge course. All of the clubs in your bag will get a workout. This nine is located atop the moraine, left by glaciers thousands of years ago. Not many level holes here and undulating fairways and greens are the norm. Because the thousands of pines found on the inward nine are not present here, it would seem there are slight breezes blowing constantly that have to be taken into consideration on most shots. The second nine holes is by far the most difficult, as it has been carved out of a thick pine forest. There are no sure pars, as all but one of the par fours is over 400 yards. Its fairways are narrow to say the least, and when playing a hole, it seems you're the only one on the course as no other fairways can be seen. You had better bring your A-game to compete on this tract. A wayward shot off the tee box and a certain bogey or worse awaits the player. Rather than the mundane, straight-away fairways, the norm is fairways curving to the right or left, and on some holes, both.

Course photo for Tracy Golf & Country ClubPublic tee-time evidence

Tracy, CA

Tracy Golf & Country Club

Tracy Golf & Country Club, located in the San Joaquin Valley about midway between Livermore and Modesto, is a member-owned private club that welcomes public tee times and has a reputation for providing good value. Half of the course lies on one side of I-580, half on the other. Situated at the eastern base of the Diablo Mountains, Tracy Golf & Country Club is a unique, desert-style layout that even during non-drought years receives less rainfall than most Northern California golf courses. Robert E. Baldock laid out the first nine holes in 1955 and the remaining nine in 1969. In 2014 Tracy Golf & Country Club benefited from a major renovation. With five sets of tee markers that range from 5,181 yards to 6,852 yards, the course provides a diverse and manageable challenge for beginners as well as highly skilled players. Though trees loosely line the playing corridors, Tracy Golf & Country Club features predominantly wide open, flat fairways. It's a?fun?course to walk if you are so inclined (the club rents push carts). Wind is often a factor. While nine holes bring water into play, other than a par 3 where you must hit over water, the hazards are not overly threatening. The rough can be tough and the greens are well protected with bunkers, but the challenges at Tracy Golf & Country Club are straightforward. This is a course where beginners and novices can gain confidence without being overwhelmed. The small greens are a strong suit of the course. They roll smoothly but putts, which break toward the valley, are tough to read. If you want to warm up before your round, Tracy Golf & Country Club’ s practice facilities include a revamped driving range, a chipping area with a sand bunker, and a putting green. The clubhouse features a full service pro shop and a restaurant that is open from early morning through the mid-afternoon. With views from the Diablo Mountains to the Sierras, it’ s an ideal place for toasting your round. If you are looking for tee time in the San Joaquin Valley, Tracy Golf & Country Club is a unique, fun, and highly playable option.
