Hilton Head Island, SC

Port Royal Golf Club - Planter's Row

Port Royal Golf Club— Barony Course on Hilton Head Island is an oldie but goodie. Located just south of Hilton Head Island Airport in the northeast corner of the island, it was one of the first golf courses built on the island when it debuted in 1963. Designed by course architect George Cobb, Port Royal Golf Club— Barony Course has stood the test of time, as it remains?a popular?tee time option on South Carolina’ s “ Golf Island.” In 2017 it even made Golf Advisor’ s list of the Top Courses in South Carolina (#24). Cobb’ s design consists of two nine-hole loops that proceed counter-clockwise on opposite sides of the gorgeous Southern-style clubhouse the course shares along with its sister eighteen, Port Royal Golf Club— Robber’ s Row Course. Though the course hosted a PGA Senior Tour (now PGA Tour Champions) event years ago, it is a sporty course that players of wide-ranging skill levels find fun. With five sets of tee markers (plus a hybrid option), the par-72 Port Royal Golf Club— Barony Course extends from 5,168 yards to 6,507 yards. Although Cobb’ s layout presents inviting prospects from the tee boxes, the challenge ramps up significantly on approach shots into small greens that are well-defended by bunkers and love grass. Lagoons and ponds loom?as ever-present threats to par, You'll find some sort of water hazard on fourteen holes. The back nine of Port Royal Golf Club— Barony Course is especially strong as the lagoons and hazards become more prominent. The highlight stretch of the round is the stretch from holes 12 to 16, dubbed Port Royal’ s “ Amen Corner.” A surprising number of tests throughout the routing dogleg to the left, including the memorable par-4 13th that bends 90 degrees en route to the green. Port Royal Golf Club— Barony Course is an expansive layout with a rhythmic, relaxing flow. The holes play in their own secluded, tree-lined corridors. You don’ t have to be a long hitter to shoot a good score here, but you do have to be accurate. Practice facilities include a driving range, putting area, and a short game area. The clubhouse features a golf shop with a wide array of merchandise and Robber’ s Row Restaurant, which is one for breakfast and lunch daily. Port Royal Golf Club— Barony Course has been around a long time and it is still one of the most enjoyable tee times you can have on Hilton Head Island.?

Course photo for Queens Harbour Yacht & Country ClubPublic tee-time evidence

Jacksonville, FL

Queens Harbour Yacht & Country Club

Queen’ s Harbour Yacht & Country Club is a championship golf course set within a gated community in Jacksonville, Florida. It is located close to the city's beaches and just 15 miles north of the TPC Sawgrass. Locals and traveling golfers rave about this stunning layout that course designer Mark McCumber carved through native woodlands. The Queen’ s Harbour Yacht & Country Club playing field winds around a freshwater lagoon system and tidal marsh beside the Intracoastal Waterway. Beautiful views, highlighted by majestic ancient oaks draped in Spanish moss and the marsh, abound. Since opening in 1991, Queen’ s Harbour Yacht & Country Club has amassed an impressive tournament history, as it has hosted PGA Tour qualifiers and numerous prestigious collegiate championships. McCumber’ s varied layout offers a mix of straightaway and dogleg holes that bend left and right. Water enters the fray on all but the very first hole. The layout’ s quartet of par 3s, beginning with the all-carry 3rd over a lake, is especially rousing. Numerous holes present risk-reward options, and when water is less of a threat overhanging tree limbs and the woods present chief threats to par. Queen’ s Harbour Yacht & Country Club greens are somewhat small and generally roll at a good clip. Five sets of tees (plus two hybrid options) stretch the routing from 5,073 yards to 6,983 yards. Thanks to lengthy forced carries, Queen’ s Harbour Yacht & Country Club is very challenging from the back tees, but the course is fun and manageable for all players who select an appropriate set of markers. You’ ll have to be accurate to avoid losing a lot of balls. The back nine at Queen’ s Harbour Yacht & Country Club, with its stretch near the Intracoastal Waterway, is quite memorable. Practice facilities include a driving range, a sand bunker, and chipping and putting greens. The clubhouse is home to the pro shop and a restaurant with gorgeous golf course and marina views. Queen’ s Harbour Yacht & Country Club is an enjoyable tee time option in Northeast Florida that provides great bang for your buck.
