Shipley, YO

northcliffe golf club

The 18 holes that stand today at Northcliffe Golf Club are by and large the work of James Braid who first constructed them in 1928. The course has changed little since then and the opening and closing holes are testament to the fantastic golf that lies between. The round begins with a relatively short par 4 requiring a tee shot to be played over the club’s infamous ravine to a hidden green. The 18th is the course signature hole and consists of a par 3 playing into the same ravine where you will be starting off from an elevated tee down to a green guarded by both sand and water. It is said to be one of the most jaw-dropping holes in Yorkshire and one that has ruined many a good scorecard.

Port Hope, ON

Ash Brook Golf Club

Ash Brook Golf Club is a popular 18-hole championship course in Port Hope, Ontario. The club, which is just off of Highway 401 some 70 miles east of Toronto, spreads out over 150 acres in a picturesque setting that is free of housing. Though the course is just a couple of kilometers from town, it provides a sense of being out in the country. Ever since Ash Brook Golf Club opened in 1974 it has been a favorite of local golfers who return again and again to this player-friendly layout. With its wide fairways, the par-72 layout presents a challenge golfers of all skill levels can enjoy. Some of the holes are lined by trees, others are wide open and fully exposed to the wind. Although a brook winds through the golf grounds and crosses a few holes, out of bounds, trees and thick vegetation beyond the groomed turf present the chief threats to scoring at Ash Brook Golf Club. The club’ s greens come in various sizes. Breaks tend to be moderate, as most of the putting surfaces feature subtle undulations. You can take on Ash Brook Golf Club from a choice of three tee decks. While the forward set of markers measures 5,068 yards, the middle set adds quite a bit more distance to challenge players at 6,070 yards. The back tee box maxes out at 6,339 yards. Ash Brook Golf Club’ s more varied side is the back nine. While the front nine is predominantly flat, the back nine sports more elevation changes and features three par 3s, three par 4s, and three par 5s. Most players opt to walk, especially since online tee-time bookings don’ t include a cart and cart fees can be steep. The course is especially beautiful in autumn when the Southern Ontario foliage bursts with color. The season extends as long into October or November until snow shuts things down. Practice facilities include a driving range, chipping green with sand bunker, and a putting green. The country-style clubhouse features a well-stocked golf shop, banquet and event space, a lounge and dining area with indoor and outdoor seating. When you are looking for a tee time in Port Hope, the place to play is Ash Brook Golf Club.
