Ventura, CA

Buenaventura Golf Course

After a $6.5 million dollar renovation, including complete re-routing of the golf course and new playing surfaces, Buenaventura Golf Course opened in March of 2005. With large bent grass greens, coupled with emerald green rye grass fairways, Buenaventura is one of the finest municipal courses in the Southland. With subtle undulations and contours, all the greens have been re-sculpted using classic Bell designs. Beautiful mature trees line Buenaventura’s pristine fairways, while white sand bunkers guard the greens. Buenaventura Golf Course is located in the beautiful beachside community of Ventura, California. Ventura is one hour north of Los Angeles and exhibits Southern California's temperate weather year around. The new design enhances the woodlands feel that people loved so much about the old Buenaventura. The hazards look like they were not merely manufactured, but rather discovered in the landscape. Among the many new considerations for the new course, safety, playability, strategy and variety all played key rolls in the development of the new design. Playing at just over 6,000 yards to a par of 70, Buenaventura emphasizes course management and is a shot maker’s delight. Aiming towards design features that were prevalent in the 1930s, the classic shapes and edges now transform the course as if one is stepping back in time.

Cleveland, OH

Cleveland Metro-Little Met Golf Course - 9 Holes

The first Cleveland Metroparks golf course, Little Met (originally named Course #2), was built as a temporary golf course in 1924. Its purpose was to stimulate interest as well as to satisfy the desire of anxious golfers prior to the opening of Big Met Golf Course. Seven years later, the demand for golf continued and the Cleveland Metropolitan Park Board decided to continue operating the course. Originally, the fairways of Little Met were merely old meadows. Putting greens were constructed by smoothing the land and sowing grass seed. Today, it's still evident that some of the tees and greens are level with the surrounding terrain. In 1982, six tees were raised and a watering system was installed. The architect for Little Met was most likely Stanley Thompson, who designed a total of 27 holes in Rocky River Reservation. Little Met was also the first golf course (and probably one of the last) in the region to offer an alternative to golf in the winter - archery golf. This form of archery became very popular, and ironically this led to its demise because people were being injured by the flying "arrows."

Course photo for CrossCreek Golf ClubPublic access under review

Temecula, CA

CrossCreek Golf Club

Laid out in a pristine, natural setting, CrossCreek Golf Club is a challenging, scenic Arthur Hills design at one of the best courses open to the public in the Temecula Valley. With no homes around the course, the semi-private golf course traverses over rolling terrain with beautiful hillside views, creeks and plenty of mature sycamore and oak trees. The par-71 course, which opened in 2001, has six sets of tees, ranging from 4,483 yards to 6,780 yards. In typical Hills fashion, the course features plenty of risk-reward holes. Take a more aggressive line on some of them, and you can be rewarded with a shorter shot to the green, but it generally brings trouble into play. The golf course has a mixed of open holes and more tree-lined holes, and there's plenty of elevation change and uneven lies. The no. 1 and no. 2 handicap holes respectively are nine and 18, both long par 4s. The ninth has water left of the green, while the 18th is a 437-yard sharp dogleg right. Besides the golf course, CrossCreek Golf Club offers a large grass driving range with target greens, and a large practice putting green and chipping green. Lessons are also available from the staff pros. Inside the clubhouse is a well-stocked golf shop that offers the latest in apparel, accessories and equipment. And the CrossCreek Grille, which doubles as a sports bar, offers a varied menu that features seasonal produce, plus a nice selection of cocktails and beer.
