Torreon’s 36 holes of championship golf is mountain golf at its very best. From the cascading natural sounds that emanate throughout the neighboring forest land to the sights and aromas of the vibrant landscape, golf at Torreon is an extraordinary journey. With unbridled inspiration, Robert von Hagge knew in an instant he had found the ideal location to create his mountainside masterpiece. The late golf course designer, along with partners Mike Smelek and Richard Baril, astutely embraced the natural contours of the land and forged an impressive blueprint –with the majestic White Mountains as its scenic setting. The Tower course, opened in 1999, features lush, rolling fairways and rock outcroppings that border numerous greens. Seven lakes offer distinct challenges on many holes, as does the aggressive use of bunkers (many strategically placed throughout both golf courses) – 180 in all. To further enthrall golfers, the Cabin course was built eight years later in 2007. Showcasing more elevation changes than its sister course, the Cabin "18” is every bit as exciting and challenging as the Tower course. Both golf courses at Torreon are open for play from April through November, and closed for the months of December through March. Mountain golf is at its best on the Tower course at Torreon and nowhere will you find a more competitive, yet relaxing round of golf. The often-used adage, "build it and they will come,” resonates with Torreon Golf Club. It didn’t take very long for noted golf course architects Robert von Hagge, Mike Smelek and Richard Baril, to realize that they had found something special in the higher elevation of northern Arizona. "Initially, it was not typical of Arizona courses,” said Smelek. "The Ponderosa pines were simply magnificent and the overall nature of the property with the lakes and ravines were spectacular. We could not have asked for a better piece of land to work with.” As Mother Nature provided the ultimate blueprint for the Tower course, the design team realized that Torreon was a family-driven community where emphasis should be placed on playability and not difficulty. What was created is a thing of beauty. Immaculately-groomed fairways with strategically placed bunkers throughout the 18 holes, offering a challenging, yet forgiving layout.
