The Quarry Golf Course, a dramatic layout in San Antonio, is not only one of the most unique courses in the country, it has been a fixture on lists of the best public courses in Texas ever since it opened in 1993. Located just five minutes from San Antonio International Airport, this Keith Foster design occupies a site with a riveting history. The Quarry Golf Course rambles in the Cementville section of San Antonio where the old Alamo Quarry and a cement-making company were located. Foster’ s design is a tale of two nines with contrasting looks and characteristics that make The Quarry Golf Course so much fun to play. The front nine sports a distinctly Scottish links-style feel. Rolling hills, high grass, reeds, and heather define the nearly treeless landscape. Creeks and streams frequently enter the fray, but you’ ll have plenty of opportunities to play bump-and-run shots along the ground. The beautiful back nine of The Quarry Golf Course spreads out entirely within the abandoned quarry that dates back more than a century. Towering, 100-foot limestone walls encase three sides of the playing field. Sun-bleached limestone ridges set the tone on several holes. The most dramatic and memorable test of the round is the par-3 17th, where you play from one ridge to another and must fly your ball over a deep ravine framed by a 40-foot waterfall. With its elevated tee boxes and abundant wildlife congregated around creeks and ponds, The Quarry Golf Course is both a joy and a thrill to play. Ties to the site's history are also present, not only in the quarry portion of the layout, but also in the iconic 200-foot tall smokestacks that are visible in the distance. The renovated clubhouse also features historic photos to honor Cementville and the people who lived and worked there. Practice facilities at the course include a full driving range, a short game area with sand bunkers, and a putting green. The Quarry Restaurant, which is open from breakfast through happy hour, has a devoted local following in addition to golfers.
