Missouri City, TX

Sienna Golf Club

A popular option for Houston area public golfers, semi-private Sienna Golf Club offers a championship layout with a nice variety of holes, excellent playing conditions and a good value. Located in the southwest suburb of Missouri City, the golf course was designed by Arthur Hills and opened in 2000 as a fully private club. Hills, in keeping with his design philosophy, created a layout with a lot of risk-reward opportunities. There are short holes and a few long ones with penalities areas looming for those who go for it on certain holes. From the back tees, the course plays 7,151 yards, but there are four other sets of tees, starting at just over 5,000 yards, to make it enjoyable for all levels. While the course is fairly flat overall, the use of mounding certainly gives it an ebb and flow. It's routed through live oaks, mature elms, and around lakes and creeks. The par-72 course has a par 5 that's just under 600 yards and a par-3 that measures around 250 yards from the tips. Sienna Golf Club has a very large practice area that includes a grass tee, practice bunkers for both greenside and fairway bunker shots, and a practice green that can be used for chipping and putting. Golf lessons are also available from the professional staff at the Sienna Golf Academy. Inside Sienna Golf Club's magnificent clubhouse is a well-stocked golf shop as well as locker rooms for its members. The clubhouse restaurant, is open every day, starting at 8 a.m., and serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner (except for Mondays and Sundays).

Course photo for Greatwood Golf ClubPublic access under review

Sugar Land, TX

Greatwood Golf Club

Greatwood Golf Club in Sugar Land, Texas, is one of the finest and most challenging courses in the Houston metropolitan area. Course architect Carlton Gipson laid out the playing field in 1990 amidst a master-planned community situated some 30 miles southwest of Houston. Over the years Greatwood Golf Club has been recognized as a Top-25 Best in Texas by the Dallas Morning News and as a Top-Rated Houston Course by the Houston Chronicle. With four sets of tee markers, the par-72 layout can play as short as 5,290 yards and as long as 6,829 yards. You’ ll find an impressively varied parade of holes with narrow fairways and water, out of bounds and houses to avoid on many holes. Aquatic penalty areas, in the form of lakes, ponds and a creek, come into play on the majority of tests at Greatwood Golf Club. A number of holes wrap around a centerpiece lake that sits in front of the clubhouse. Lipson’ s layout will get your heart pounding with its forced carries over water, most notably on the monster par-5 18th, which features a final approach to a small island green that also is home to a 100-year-old pecan tree. One nice aspect of Greatwood Golf Club is that it allows players to ease into the round with its two shortest and easiest par 4s right off the bat. Thereafter, the challenge ramps up. Greatwood Golf Club’ s par 3s and par 5s are quite long. Several greens are elevated and tilted from back to front. Practice facilities at Greatwood Golf Club include a driving range, a chipping green, and a putting green. The clubhouse features a golf shop and a bar and grill that typically is open from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. The next time you are looking for a challenging course in Houston’ s southwest reaches, consider Greatwood Golf Club in Sugar Land.
