Boerne, TX

Tapatio Springs Hill Country Resort

Tapatio Springs was ranked by Golf Advisor #10 in Texas! Just northwest of San Antonio, nestled in a river valley and woven into the grandeur of some of the prettiest Texas Hill Country, you’ll find The Resort at Tapatio Springs. In April of 2011, Country and Western legend George Strait and longtime friend Tom Cusick purchased the Resort. The changes that have been made since their ownership began are simply amazing. Every room in the 112-room hotel has been renovated along with the locker rooms, kitchen, grill, and golf shop. They are in the process of making it once again rank at the top of all Texas Resorts. On the four mile winding entrance road to The Resort at Tapatio Springs from San Antonio on I-10, you start to appreciate the magnificence and peacefulness of the Hill County. As you drive across the water crossing the road, see the lush golf course and the huge beautiful house on the limestone cliff over-looking the entire valley resort, you know you made the right decision to spend some time at The Resort at Tapatio Springs – and it will only get better. The Resort features the best that Mother Nature has to offer including a variety of trees, wildflowers, axis and whitetail deer, rolling hills with deep valleys, limestone cliffs rising out of crystal clear springs and lakes, and panoramic views from the majestic mountains - ok, so they are only hills but some of the tallest in the area at 1900 feet - to us Texans. And the weather is consistently perfect - the average annual high of 68 makes it excellent for year round golf and other activities and the higher elevation is an average of 12 degrees cooler than San Antonio. In 1981, Tapatio Springs started it’s evolution from a 2100 acre a cattle ranch into a top ranking conference center and golf resort. In fact, Tapatio Springs has maintained the ranking of a “Texas Top Ten Resort Course” since 1992. Today, in this valley surrounded by beautiful hills dotted with magnificent homes, you’ll find a mixture of accommodations, a well stocked pro shop and 18 holes of championship golf, executive and conference center facilities, and the La Cascada Restaurant for fine dining. The Resort at Tapatio Springs is an ideal setting for corporate meetings, executive retreats, or special occasion meetings; family or social reunions; or a weekend to weeklong escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. Cypress, TX

BlackHorse Golf Club

BlackHorse Golf Club— North Course may be the less hyped of the two championship layouts at one of the Houston area’ s premier daily-fee golf facilities, but it has no shortage of fans. Both courses at the club, located about 25 miles from downtown Houston in Cypress, Texas, were designed by Peter Jacobsen and Jim Hardy in 2000. They spread out in an upscale residential development amidst wetlands, lakes, and creeks, and plenty of trees. BlackHorse Golf Club— North Course is generally considered easier and more playable than its higher-profile sister layout, BlackHorse Golf Club— South Course. Nonetheless, over the years, BlackHorse Golf Club— North Course has appeared on lists of the top courses in Texas. Much of the fun comes from Jacobsen and Hardy’ s varied design. It’ s an exciting mix of long and short, dogleg and straightaway holes. Players of all skill levels can find a comfortable yardage from the six sets of tee markers that range from 5,065 to 7,301 yards. While the ‘ Big Jake’ tips present formidable forced carries, players who utilize the shorter options will find a more manageable game, as landing areas are generous. The wide playing field accommodates the use of driver off the tee on most holes. Water is a nearly ever-present threat throughout the front nine— beware of aquatic penalty areas in some form on all but the 1st and 3rd holes. The par-3 2nd calls for a full carry over a pond, while lakes and wetlands trail up the right side all the way from tee to green on holes 4, 5 and 6. The signature par-3 6th features an elevated green built up with railroad ties. This three-hole stretch is a highlight of the round at BlackHorse Golf Club— North Course. In contrast to the front nine, the only water-bound test on the back nine is the finishing hole. With the houses confined to a small perimeter section of the course and well removed from the action, the layout rambles in a pleasing wooded setting. Most players find the abundant birdlife and huge oak trees quite impressive. BlackHorse Golf Club— North Course is a scenic treat. Both BlackHorse courses play out of the same large clubhouse. You’ ll find a pro shop, locker rooms, and a bar and restaurant that serves breakfast and lunch. The club’ s extensive practice facilities include a grass range, short game area with practice sand bunker, and a putting green. BlackHorse Golf Club— North Course is

Course photo for Southern Oaks Golf ClubPublic access under review

Burleson, TX

Southern Oaks Golf Club

Designed by PGA Champion Mark Brooks, Southern Oaks Golf Club was inspired by the simple elegance of early American courses and the time-honored links of Scotland. This spectacular daily-fee course combines timeless, classic golf course architecture with modern facilities and amenities. Encompassing 300 acres, the land’s natural features are artfully modified and arranged to produce an intriguing and visually striking golf course that assimilates the scenic beauty of the local terrain. The course is built on softly rolling landscape that is beautifully framed by centuries-old trees and intermittently intersected by Village Creek. Mark Brooks’ skillful design blends these elements to create a course of exceptional character with a wonderful balance of long and short holes. The traditional architecture of Southern Oaks allows the course to be as enjoyable for the player of average skill as it is for the player with a more advanced game. Wayward shots are not overly penalized, as water hazards and out-of-bounds are not an integral part of play. However, thoughtful shotmaking and intelligent club selection are necessary to successfully avoid the strategically placed bunkers that await players on nearly every hole. The yardage for Southern Oaks ranges between 5,350 and 6,650 from the front and middle tee boxes. From the back tees, the course stretches to 7,100 yards, and for professional and top amateur events the course yardage can play to over 7,300 on this challenging par-71 layout. Southern Oaks is the direct result of Mark Brooks’ 16 years of tournament experience on the PGA Tour. During his professional career he has played and won on many of the world’s most demanding courses, and has had the opportunity to study in detail the features and characteristics that identify these courses as among the world’s best. His ability to distinguish the extraordinary from the ordinary has been incorporated into Southern Oaks and has resulted in a truly memorable golf experience.
