Course photo for Penn National Golf Club - Iron ForgePublic access under review

Fayetteville, PA

Penn National Golf Club - Iron Forge

Iron Forge was designed by architect Bill Love and opened for play in 1997, almost 30 years after its sister course. The Iron Forge is visually stunning with 30-mile views of the surrounding farmland and mountains. It starts and plays toward the Michaux State Forest, in the foothills of South Mountain, and makes a single loop home, passing through a variety of terrain that offers exciting golf and breathtaking views. In contrast to the Founders Course, Iron Forge is nearly treeless. It will let you grip it and rip it from the tee but the greens and surrounds place a premium on shots to the green and putting. There is also the mysterious "Mountain Effect" that takes control from the 4th through 11th holes--your eyes will tell you one thing on the greens but just remember that speed and break are controlled by the Mountain! During the construction of the Iron Forge course, a small lime kiln was uncovered. Dating back to the early 1800s, this kiln is located behind the 9th green. It has been preserved, and guests are welcome to visit there and learn more about early iron making, and its role in the area's history. Golf Digest rates the Iron Forge Course 4-Stars, Zagat rates it 25 points.

A provider indicates that the course may allow public play, but Golf One has not yet verified the access claim strongly enough for search indexing.

Course photo for Galen Hall Golf ClubPublic tee-time evidence

Wernersville, PA

Galen Hall Golf Club

Galen Hall Golf Club in Wernersville, PA, has a rich history dating back to the early 20th century. The original nine holes of the course were designed by Scottish golf course architect Alex Findlay and opened in 1912. This early design laid the foundation for what would become one of Pennsylvania’s cherished golf courses. In 1917, the course was expanded to 18 holes by another prominent golf course architect, A.W. Tillinghast. Tillinghast’s addition included the creation of the 15th hole, famously known as the “Moat Hole.” This hole is noted for being one of the first island greens in the United States and the oldest still in use to this day. The course’s history is intertwined with the former Galen Hall Resort, which was a prominent destination in the early 20th century. The course and hotel were a Mecca for celebrities during this era. Frank Sinatra and Milton Berle stayed at the hotel and the golf course drew names like Fred and Adele Astaire who once went out as a foursome with then pro Bob Middleton and his assistant Henry Moyer in 1927. Unfortunately, the hotel was destroyed by a fire on Easter Sunday in 1963. The blaze, which was visible from miles away, gutted the building. The cause was suspected to be arson, but no arrests were made. Despite the loss of the hotel, the golf course and restaurant continued to operate, maintaining the legacy of the resort. Today, Galen Hall Golf Club is a public course that prides itself on offering a country club experience to all golfers. The course is meticulously maintained, providing excellent playing conditions throughout the season. It is a hidden gem in Berks County, known for its historic significance and beautiful, challenging design. Twosomes will be paired up on weekends. No walking before 5 p.m. on weekends.
