Yorktown Heights, NY

Mohansic Golf Course

Mohansic Golf Course in Yorktown Heights, New York, is one of six eighteen-hole courses operated by the Westchester County Department of Parks, Recreation and Conservation. The course, which dates back to 1926 but has since been partially renovated, is considered by many locals to be the toughest of the six tracks. It’ s well cared for and ranks right up with the best public golf experiences you can have in Westchester County. The pleasing parkland setting is utterly free of course-side housing. Mohansic presents a classic challenge with its mix of straightaway and dogleg holes and its elevation changes. Tom Winton laid out the playing field on rolling hills and moderately steep terrain. Mature trees line the picturesque but frequently tight playing corridors. Thick rough can present problems, but it also saves many an errant shot from winding up in the trees. Mohansic Golf Course features numerous uphill, downhill and sidehill holes. Players can expect numerous challenging lies and stances throughout the round. Adding to the difficulty, Mohansic Golf Course is a par 70 that plays long. There are only three teeing options— 5,456 yards from the forward markers, 6,285 from the middle tees, and 6,558 yards from the back. The course features just two par 5s and they play back to back. At 592 yards from the tips, the 9th is by far the longest test of the day, while the 10th offers scoring opportunities as it tops out at 495 yards. Only one hole (the 7th) features a water hazard. The toughest test of the round is the long dogleg-left par-4 4th, which culminates at a well-bunkered, elevated green that falls off at the edges. For the amount of play Mohansic Golf Course entertains, conditions are quite impressive. Practice facilities include a driving range, a chipping area with a practice bunker, and a putting green. The clubhouse features a pro shop and a nice grill and lounge. There’ s also a halfway house at the turn. Tee times tend to go fast at Mohansic Golf Course, with good reason. A day at this Westchester County muni is a highly satisfying experience that provides excellent value.

Suffern, NY

Spook Rock Golf Course

Laid out over gently rolling hills at the foot of the Ramapo Mountains, Spook Rock Golf Course is an award winning daily fee layout that will challenge all levels of golfers. Playing just a little more than 6,800 yards from the back tees, this Francis Duane design that opened in 1970 has water features on seven holes, 50-plus bunkers both in the fairways and on the greens, and sloping greens that can at times be a challenge to read and putt. The heavily tree-lined course, which got its name from American Indian lore, is situated on the former site of Kane's Open, which was the first Boy Scout camp in the United States. The no. 1 handicap hole is the 538-yard, par-5 sixth, a dogleg left with a pond in front of the green. The finishing stretch is solid, too, and includes the 185-yard par 3 17th. Trees easily come into play on this hole, so it helps if golfers can shape the ball off the tee. Besides the golf course, Spook Rock also has a driving range, chipping green with practice bunker, and practice putting green. The driving range is also lighted for nighttime play, and there are demo clubs available for guests who don't have their own. The facility also has a well-stocked golf shop with the latest in apparel and accessories. And the Chalet at Spook Rock offers banquet services as well as a top-notch food and beverage operation.?

White Plains, NY

Maple Moor Golf Course

Maple Moor Golf Course in White Plains, New York is one of six impressive courses operated by the Westchester County Department of Parks, Recreation and Conservation. Located just off the Hutchinson River Parkway, it’ s a popular place to play with a loyal following among Westchester County golfers who enjoy its sporty variety and the challenge of negotiating its tight fairways. Maple Moor Golf Course, which takes its name from the abundance of maple trees on the site, is the oldest of the county’ s playing fields. Designed by course architect Tom Winton, the layout rambles in tranquil surroundings on 140 acres of what was a historic farm. Maple Moor Golf Course was a nine-hole private layout before Westchester County took it over in 1925 and it became a full eighteen in 1927. In recent years the parkland-style course has benefited from significant renovations that saw the addition of new bunkers, cart paths, irrigation and drainage systems, and general improvements to the playing field. With three sets of tee markers, Maple Moor Golf Course can be played at 5,309 yards from the forward tees, 6,035 yards from the middle, and 6,374 yards from the back. Since par is 71, the middle tee markers challenge many players for distance. The two toughest par 4s on the front nine measure 380+ yards, while the back nine boasts a couple of par 4s that measure 427 yards and 407 yards, respectively. Maple Moor Golf Course mixes things up nicely with a drivable par 4 and a short par 3. Additionally, only one of the three par 5s tops 500 yards. Most players will likely have more trouble keeping the ball in the fairway on this narrowest of the Westchester County courses.Thankfully, the tree-lined fairways are actually a little roomier than they first appear. Water comes into play on only about three holes. The greens are a strong suit of Maple Moor Golf Course. The putting surfaces are surprisingly large and varied— some are rather flat, others have significant slopes and undulations. Most players at Maple Moor Golf Course comment favorably about the greens and the overall condition of the course. Take heart, walkers--the playing field occupies gently rolling terrain, and with greens and tees in close proximity, this is an ideal test to tackle without a golf cart. Practice facilities are limited— there’ s just a putting green. You’ ll find the pro shop on the ground floor of t

Course photo for Saxon Woods Golf CoursePublic access under review

Scarsdale, NY

Saxon Woods Golf Course

Saxon Woods Golf Course in Scarsdale, New York is one of six very popular golf courses run by the Westchester County Department of Parks, Recreation and Conservation. Conveniently located off of exit 22 of the Hutchinson River Parkway, this busy facility typically entertains more golfers than any other course in the county. Saxon Woods Golf Course, which is just a couple of miles from storied, private Winged Foot Country Club, entices players back again and again with its attractive playing field, fine course conditioning, and attractively placed tee times. As the course name suggests, the playing corridors of Saxon Woods Golf Course have been carved out of a forest. The layout, created by Tom Winton in 1931, bears some resemblance to Winged Foot, so tales have also long persisted that A.W Tillinghast worked on the course at some point. Saxon Woods Golf Course exudes a vintage parkland aura with narrow fairways and elevated greens. The layout rambles on rolling terrain that is very walkable. With three sets of tee markers, Saxon Woods Golf Course can be played at 5,375 yards, 6,038 yards, and 6,293 yards. Trees, rough, and out of bounds represent the main defenses of this par-72 playing field. Water, mostly in the form of a creek, factors into play on a handful of holes. The bunkers are shallow and not overly penalizing. For a course that is so heavily played, Saxon Woods Golf Course earns plaudits for its greens and overall conditions. Renowned course architect Stephen Kay renovated the tee boxes and several greens. Marshalls try to keep groups moving throughout the round, but the pace of play can bog down. At the end of the season, Westchester County keeps the course open until the first significant snowfall or early January, whichever comes first. Practice facilities at Saxon Woods Golf Course include a driving range and putting green. The clubhouse is home to a pleasantly run pro shop and a separately operated restaurant. In the New York City Metropolitan realm, where there’ s shortage of fine public courses, Saxon Woods Golf Course is a coveted tee time that consistently delivers excellent value.
