Hauppauge, NY

Wind Watch Golf Course

Wind Watch Golf & Country Club in Hauppauge, New York, is as pretty and fun an inland course as you’ ll find on Long Island. The layout, built by Joe Lee in 1971 to anchor an attractive neighborhood and updated by Stephen Kay in 1997, is a ClubCorp daily-fee facility that shares a parking lot with the Hyatt Regency Long Island. A favorite of locals and visitors alike, the elegant Wind Watch Golf & Country Club playing field boasts tree-lined fairways, 12 lakes and ponds adorned with fountains, a cascading waterfall, and distant views from a couple of the highest points on Long Island (though you cannot quite see the Sound.) Those highest points come at the very beginning and end of the round. The 1st hole is a straightaway par 4 flanked by trees, so you’ ll be tested right out of the gate. The 6th hole, the first of four water-bound par 3s at Wind Watch Golf & Country Club, requires a carry over both a pond and bunkers to reach the green. The short par-4 11th maxes out at 311 yards to tempt long hitters to try to drive the green, but beware of the water right and OB left. The round concludes with the only dogleg on the course and a rare hole on Wind Watch Golf & Country Club’ s back nine with no water in play. The severely uphill approach leads to a rousing view at the three-tiered putting surface that is the toughest green on the course. Though the club is noted for its high vantage points, aside from the beginning and ending of the round, the playing field is actually pleasantly flat. Besides its abundance of water hazards, Wind Watch Golf & Country Club challenges players with more than 70 bunkers, many of which are large. Practice facilities include a driving range and short game area. Seasons Grill in the Wind Watch Golf & Country Club clubhouse has earned a following among local golfers and non-golfers with its casual indoor and outdoor dining. A tee time on this lush, delightfully landscaped and scenic course makes for a thoroughly enjoyable and challenging day of golf.

Putnam County Golf Course

Enjoy A Wonderful Golf Experience That Challenges You At Your Level "This classic course has two distinct nines…if you hit it like me, you'll use all the clubs in your bag and play a lot of different shots from all over." -Don Penzine, Renegade League Commissioner Putnam County GC is one of those rare public golf courses where golfers can enjoy the tradition of excellence established when the course was a private country club. Bent grass tees and greens, rye fairways and a state-of-the-art irrigation system are the perfect combination for great playing conditions throughout the season.

Woodhaven, NY

Forest Park Golf Course

Forest Park Golf Course is located in Woodhaven, Queens. It is just off the Jackie Robinson Parkway. Originally designed by Tom Bendelo in 1896, it was redesigned by Stephen Kay in 1995. In addition to approximately two million dollars of course renovations, a completely new clubhouse was also built. The renovation included a significant lengthening of the course; it now plays at over 6,000 yards. This course, with its tree-lined fairways, elevated greens, and three water holes is a favorite of many NYC golfers.

Course photo for Sprain Lake Golf CoursePublic tee-time evidence

Yonkers, NY

Sprain Lake Golf Course

Sprain Lake Golf Course has long been a popular public tee time in Yonkers, New York. One of six eighteen-hole layouts operated by The Department of Parks, Recreation and Conservation of Westchester County, Sprain Lake Golf Course delights highly skilled and less accomplished players alike with its scenic lakeside, tree-lined playing field. It’ s also a facility on the rise, as it recently appeared high up on Golf Advisor’ s list of the Top 25 Most Improved U.S Golf Courses. The par-70 course was laid out on an oblong, narrow site back in 1928 by Tom Winton. With four sets of tee markers, Sprain Lake Golf Course can be played at as short as 4,688 yards and as long as 6,010 yards. Because of the rolling character of the golf grounds and frequent elevation changes, the course plays longer than the scorecard would suggest. To conform to the nature of the golf grounds, Winton ran stretches of holes out in one direction and back in the other. For example, the first three holes head straight out in a southerly direction. Following a transitional, angled par 3 that plays beside Sprain Lake, the next three holes turn back alongside the lake at the far boundary of the golf course. You’ ll find more variety on the par-36 back nine, as it features the only two par 5s of the round. Doglegs on the back nine, most notably the right-angled par-4 12th hole— enliven the game at Sprain Lake Golf Course. A stream bed also crosses the fairways of four holes. Other features that make the layout a challenge for players of all skill levels include hills that can provide awkward lies, rough and trees that narrow the playing corridors, and small greens. While there’ s just one fairway bunker on the entire course, you will see more sand around the putting surfaces. In recent years improvements have been made to the tee boxes and several greens. Practice facilities include a driving range and a putting green. The clubhouse features a pro shop and a restaurant. A tee time to play sporty Spring Lake Golf Course is good fun in Westchester County.

Course photo for Dunwoodie Golf CoursePublic tee-time evidence

Yonkers, NY

Dunwoodie Golf Course

Dunwoodie Golf Course is one of six eighteen-hole courses operated by The Department of Parks, Recreation and Conservation of Westchester County. Perched at the top of Dunwoodie Heights in the center of the city of Yonkers, the course has long been a favorite tee time option for players seeking a fun and sporty round. Dunwoodie golf Course is the shortest and easiest of the Westchester munis, and it can be a fine choice for inexperienced players and those who are new to the game. Skilled players also enjoy the game here, as accuracy is essential to score well. The course, which dates back to 1903, spreads out on an attractive, 126-acre site with no houses around. Mature trees encase the golf grounds and line the playing corridors. Several holes enjoy a completely secluded realm. Dunwoodie Golf Course is distinguished by its dramatic topography. You’ ll find plenty of hills and an attractive mix of narrow and more open holes. While the par-70 layout extends to a top distance of 5,830 yards, the middle set of markers measures 5,441 yards and the forward tees provide an appropriately differentiated challenge at 4,722 yards. The round at Dunwoodie Golf Course starts with five par 4s before players come to the only par 5 and par 3 on the front nine. The more varied back nine features three par 3s and two par 5. For an indication of the short nature of the playing field, note that none of the first three holes at Dunwoodie Golf Course reaches 330 yards as a maximum distance. Nonetheless, each is narrow and challenging. Some of the holes sport intriguing shapes and a creek, the only water hazard on the golf grounds, crosses a couple of fairways. The greens vary in size and provide a good chance to drain a putt. This is a walkable layout, but it is quite hilly, so riding is more common. Practice facilities include a driving range, chipping area, and putting green. The clubhouse features a pro shop and a restaurant facility. Dunwoodie Golf Course in Dunwoodie Heights is a pretty, intimate, and tranquil playing field that locals really love. Don't miss out on a tee time at this venerable Westchester County facility.
