Black Forest

If you appreciate classic design on land that was naturally destined to become a superb golf course layout, you'll want to play Black Forest again and again. It is one of those rare golf courses you can never tire of playing because it will present you with a different look and challenge every time out. Doak's canvas was nearly 400 acres of native Michigan evergreen and hardwood forests to which he carefully added some of the most visually stunning bunkering and multi-contoured greens you will find anywhere in the world. The combination of trees, sand, grasses, and elevation changes are a veritable feast for the eyes. You'll have to force yourself to ignore the view for a moment to focus on hitting the ball. “This is one of the courses that you hardly ever see another golf hole. The course is ripped through some of the finest golf course property I have ever seen. You feel like you are secluded in a forest of golf holes that will go on forever,” described Dan Rusnak on GolfChicago.com. You won't be hitting through tunnels of houses in a real estate development because there's not a single house on the golf course site. Black Forest was Michigan resident Doak's first acclaimed design, and he has risen in esteem ever since to stand with the premier architects of the game today. His “minimalist” approach is appreciated for its respect for existing terrain, a preference for shotmaking skills rather than unbridled power, and economical construction which helps keep golfers' fees reasonable.

Onaway, MI

Black Lake Golf Club

While many courses have two or three so-called signature holes that are worthy of brochure status, every hole at Black Lake Golf Club could easily be on the front cover of a magazine promoting the course. That is one reason that it was placed #44 in Golf Digest's "100 Greatest Public Courses in America" in May 2012 and placed #9 in the Best Value category. The course is owned by the UAW, who selected one of golf’s most acclaimed course architects, Rees Jones, to design an environmentally responsible, championship caliber course. It was a challenge eagerly embraced by Jones, Golf World Magazine’s "Architect of the Year" in 1995. "The holes were here, we just had to find them," Jones said. "We strive for holes blending with the natural terrain. There is nothing artificial or contrived at Black Lake. We were trying to build an old-style, course," Jones said. "You'll notice we don't have mounds or moguls. We just have sweeps and natural grades." The condition of the course is immaculate making your round more enjoyable, the only bad lie on the course comes with an errant shot that enters in the woods or the hazards. Complementing the championship course is The Little Course, a nine-hole par 3 meant to introduce young people to the game as well as sharpen veteran players' short games. In addition, Black Lake also presents an unrivaled practice area with a 350-yard double sided bentgrass tee range, four practice bunkers and four chipping and putting greens, a clubhouse with dining room and lounge, and men's and women's locker rooms. Black Lake is open to the public and welcomes all guests as if they were members. The course is designed to provide a challenging experience for golfers at all levels of skill, with five or more sets of tee markers on nearly every hole, playing length from 5,058 to 7,030 yards.
