Course photo for Wilmette Golf ClubPublic tee-time evidence

Wilmette, IL

Wilmette Golf Club

Located on Chicago's North Shore, just 20 minutes from downtown Chicago, Wilmette Golf Club is the best public golf course challenge in the area! While Wilmette Golf Club's total yardage is only less than 6,400 from the back tees, it plays to much greater length. The short par 4's and the fact that there are only two par 5's in this par 70 track make Wilmette play like a championship layout. Add to that the narrow fairways and the quick doglegs throughout the course and you're facing a real challenge of skill and an even more daunting challenge of golf course management. Nowhere is that more evident than on 14, a very short par 4. With OB and tight trees right and strategically placed bunkering, 14 could--and should--be played long-iron wedge! But feed the ego, pull the driver, and let her rip and you're soon hitting three from the tee with a good chance at double. The entire golf course is set up to be a test in patience and decision-making ability. There's just enough water and bunkering to force some honest approach shots which means intelligent club selection from the tee is a must. Stray just a bit from the fairway and Wilmette can stymie you. The very mature, stately oak and elm trees encroach very close to the narrow fairways. If you give yourself the chance and reach in regulation, birdies can be had! These are some of the most receptive, truest and fastest greens in the area and could be one of the most distinguishing aspects of golf at Wilmette. Once you get your ball rolling on line here, it stays on line making putting Wilmette greens an absolute joy! Wilmette does offer five different sets of tees to test all abilities. The black tees are the longest and measure 6,363 yards and carry a 70.8 rating with a slope of 128. The white tees the shortest set and measure only 4,668 yards with a rating of 67.5 and a slope of 118 for ladies. It's easy to see that Wilmette Golf Club adjusts to fit all players.

Course photo for Marengo Ridge Golf ClubPublic tee-time evidence

Marengo, IL

Marengo Ridge Golf Club

The concept that became Marengo Ridge started in 1963 when Harry Witek, his two sons Bob and Jerry, partners Hillard Leward, and Al Bieze engaged architect William James Spear to design and build a nine-hole golf course cut through the wooded hills between U.S. Route 20 and Harmony Hill Rd. A large, working cow barn was renovated and became the center of the club activity. The first floor served as the pro shop, restaurant, and bar. The second floor was a large dining area where Friday fish fries, Saturday prime rib, and Sunday breakfast became popular attractions in the area. Many wonderful memories as well as friends remain from those days. As the population and business grew, it became apparent that another nine holes was needed. After purchasing the farmland north of the course, construction began in 1988 and the new nine was opened in 1990. For two years operations were run out of the old clubhouse. However, the location on the south end of the golf course made the logistics complicated. It was obvious a new clubhouse was needed and in 1993 the current clubhouse opened. The twenty five years between the construction of the two nines as well as the differences in topography created a unique contrast in design. Modern construction techniques created a challenging and picturesque nine holes from what was once farmland. Combined with the original nine cut through the trees, the current eighteen hole course is a golf experience not found at many courses. Today Marengo Ridge is owned and operated by Bob and Janet Witek. Part of the original ownership group, Bob has dedicated his life to creating a great golf experience in a customer-friendly atmosphere. “Golf is a wonderful business. You get to work outside in beautiful surroundings and meet truly friendly people. Please come out and enjoy the experience. You won’t regret it.”

Course photo for Sugar Creek Golf CoursePublic tee-time evidence

Villa Park, IL

Sugar Creek Golf Course

Sugar Creek Golf Course is a nine-hole, par 32 public golf course, owned and operated by the Elmhurst Park District and Village of Villa Park. The course features large, meticulously maintained, undulating Bentgrass greens, comparable to the best in the Chicago area. Also, a three-acre pond comes into play on four of the nine holes, providing a challenge for the more experienced player, yet playable enough for golfers with less experience. Renovations to the course in 2003 included additional sand bunkers and tees, extension of the cart path system, and changing hole #8 from a par 3 to a par 4. Additionally, the course layout was rearranged to allow for improved flow from hole to hole, and better pace of play.
