Course photo for Bear's Best AtlantaPublic access under review

Suwanee, GA

Bear's Best Atlanta

Since it opened in 2002, Bear's Best Atlanta has been one of the most coveted tee times in Georgia's capital. Tucked within a gated community about 35 miles from downtown Atlanta, the amenity-rich club promises to give public golfers a high-end, private club-style experience. Bear's Best Atlanta is a concept course that was recognized as one of America's best new courses in 2005 and, more recently, one of the best courses you can play in Georgia by GolfWeek magazine. Over the years Jack Nicklaus has designed hundreds of golf courses. The eighteen holes here are replicas of Nicklaus's favorite holes from some of his most impressive and best-known layouts as well from a few of his lesser-known courses. Each and every test at Bear's Best Atlanta fits the sloping, partly open, partly wooded grounds well. You'll find holes from PGA Tour fixtures such as Muirfield National, the Champion Course at PGA National Resort (home of the Bear Trap), plus Gleneagles in Scotland, which hosted the 2012 Ryder Cup. Several of the replicas come from notable courses in the Western United States such as Sherwood Country Club, Castle Pines, and Old Works. Hole no. 4 at Bear's Best Atlanta, a version of the dogleg-right 2nd at Old Works in Montana, is one of the most memorable of the round because of its black sand bunkers. While you may never be able to play the private Muirfield Village in Ohio, host of the PGA Tour's Memorial Tournament every year, you can get a sense of it when you play the beautiful par-3 6th over water here. While Nicklaus's favorite holes are typically hard holes, Bear's Best Atlanta is a course that players of wide-ranging skill levels can enjoy. Five sets of tee boxes, plus two more combo options, provide distance options between 4,725 yards and 6,824 yards. If you want to warm up before your round, Bear's Best Atlanta boasts an expansive grass range with bunkered target greens, a short game area with practice bunkers, and two putting greens. The elegant clubhouse features a full-service pro shop, displays of Nicklaus memorabilia, dining facilities, and an outdoor pavilion. A tee time at Bear's Best Atlanta is not only a layout that fans of Jack Nicklaus and golf course design will enjoy, it stands on its own merits as one of the Atlanta metro area's finest upscale public golf experiences.

Course photo for Callahan Golf LinksPublic access under review

Waleska, GA

Callahan Golf Links

Built on a 150-year-old family farm, Callahan Golf Links is a beautiful golf course that preserves the natural beauty of its original setting. The course is mostly links-style with sweeping views from the first tee to the 18th green. Designed by D.J. DeVictor, and opened in 2007, the course has four sets of tees, playing from 4,669 yards to 6,678 yards. There are a few trees on the course, some large bunkers, a few water features and large, undulating greens. The course eases golfers in with a 495-yard par 5, a dogleg left that plays around a pond. The approach is over a creek, so it's no layup, but certainly an opportunity to start off with a good score. Four holes later is the no. 1 handicap hole, the 429-yard, par-4 fifth. Trees that line the fairway come into play big-time on this dogleg right that requires both accuracy and length. The no. 2 handicap hole, the 419-yard par-4 13th, is the opposite -- a dogleg left that plays through a narrow chute of trees before opening up in the fairway. Besides the golf course, Callahan Golf Links also has excellent practice facilities that include a grass range, short-game area, and practice putting green. Golf instruction is also available from the professional. A golf shop with the latest in apparel, accessories, and equipment is located in the clubhouse. And the Callahan Bar & Grill is open every day, serving a variety of sandwiches, appetizers, and beverages.

Course photo for Chateau Elan Golf ClubPublic tee-time evidence

Braselton, GA

Chateau Elan Golf Club

The Chateau Course at Chateau Elan Golf Club is the marquee layout at a 45-hole club and luxury resort in Braselton, Georgia, about 45 miles northeast of downtown Atlanta. Although the golf club is a chief amenity of Chateau Elan Winery & Resort, overnight stays are not required to play any of the courses. Course architect Denis Griffiths laid out the Chateau Course at Chateau Elan Golf Club in 1989 and he came back in 2016 to touch it up. When it opened, it garnered attention for being one of the best courses in Georgia and ever since it has remained a premier public tee time in the Atlanta metropolitan area. The Chateau Course is not a standard resort course. The longer and tougher of Chateau Elan Golf Club’ s two championship layouts delights highly skilled and less accomplished golfers alike, but it is no patsy. Griffiths’ par-71 creation can play as long as 7,030 yards and as short as 5,092 yards. It spreads out on 170 acres of lush rolling terrain that is ideal for golf. The Chateau Course at Chateau Elan Golf Club features generous tree-lined fairways, pleasing elevation changes, and distinct bailout areas. More than 80 strategically placed bunkers dot the playing field, ramping up the challenge throughout the round even as they add extra definition to each hole. Water also accounts for plenty of trouble, as three lakes and two creeks enter the fray on a total of ten holes. The Chateau Course at Chateau Elan Golf Club features large, undulating, recently renovated TifEagle greens that roll true. The highlight of the round is a stretch of scenic holes on the back nine with significant elevation changes. Chances are you'll see a wide variety of wildlife throughout the day, as well. Troon manages the Chateau Course at Chateau Elan Golf Club and keeps playing conditions excellent throughout the year. Practice facilities include a driving range, chipping area with bunker and multiple putting greens. The clubhouse features an exceptional pro shop, renovated locker rooms, and Sarazen’ s, a popular restaurant overlooking the 18th hole of the Chateau Course. For a rousing round on a challenging and scenic resort layout, make a tee time to play the Chateau Course at Chateau Elan Golf Club..
