Course photo for Golf Club at South HamptonPublic access under review

St. Augustine, FL

Golf Club at South Hampton

With wide fairways and a player-friendly design, especially from the forward tees, the golf course at the Golf Club at South Hampton is enjoyable for every level of player. This Mark McCumber design can play more than 7,000 yards from the tips, but there are six sets of tees, including a burgundy set for juniors that is just 2,846 yards. While the course has 16 lakes and more than 60 bunkers that often come into play from the back tees, the forward tees don't require golfers to carry most of those obstacles. The par-4 18th is a great example. Players on the two sets of back tees have to carry wetlands to reach the fairway. But those on the forward tees have nothing but fairway in front of them. In general, however, landing areas are wide for all players. Still, for those who venture to play most of the golf course, there are two par 3s that are more than 200 yards, and the par-5s from the back tees usually require three good shots to reach the green. There are also plenty of tree-lined fairways, doglegs and quick, large, undulating greens. In addition to the golf course, the Golf Club at South Hampton has a full grass driving range, short-game area, and practice putting green. The golf shop is also well stocked, and the staff is very friendly and helpful. And inside the facility's beautiful clubhouse, you'll find an inviting bar and grill, with a good selection of bottled beer and drafts and excellent food. It's open for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Deland, FL

Victoria Hills Golf Club

With rolling terrain, elevation change and majestic pines as the backdrop for one gorgeous hole after another, Victoria Hills Golf Club is a favorite for golfers looking to play in central Florida. Considered by many one of Ron Garl's best designs, Victoria Hills Golf Club opened in 2000. It offers contours and movement atypical to the area, giving it a bit of a Carolinas feel. The course, which measures 7,149 yards from the back tees, presents a wide variety of holes with an assortment of doglegs, water features, fairway and greenside bunkers and elevated, undulating greens. There are six sets of tees, starting with the "Community" tees at 4,893 yards, to serve every level of player. While the course certainly has its challenges, it's very playable. The no. 1 handicap hole is the 585-yard par-5 fifth, but there's not a lot of trouble on the hall. For most players, it just requires three well-struck shots to the green. Water does come into play on several holes, including the 13th through 17th. The par-3 seventh, at 227 yards, is another challenging hole on the course. Victoria Hills Golf Club also offers a "mega" practice facility that includes a double-sided driving range as well as several chipping and putting greens. Instruction from the Victoria Hills Golf Academy is also available. And before or after golf, you'll want to spend a little time at Sparrow's Grille, an award winning dining facility that offers a great Sunday brunch as well as regular menu.

Course photo for Crandon Golf Key BiscaynePublic tee-time evidence

Key Biscayne, FL

Crandon Golf Key Biscayne

Crandon Golf at Key Biscayne, the only public golf course on Biscayne Bay, has been a coveted tee time in Miami ever since it debuted in 1973. Located on a small barrier island less than 10 miles from downtown Miami, the golf course, formerly known as The Links at Key Biscayne, is in the heart of Crandon Park. Crandon Golf at Key Biscayne is the golf jewel of the Miami-Dade County Parks system. Years ago Golf Digest rated it among America’ s Top 75 Upscale Public Courses. When you play here, you’ ll be walking in the footsteps of some of the legends of the game. For eighteen years the course hosted the Royal Caribbean Classic on the PGA Tour Champions. Notable winners included Lee Trevino, Gary Player, and Lee Elder. Crandon Golf at Key Biscayne is both beautiful and very challenging. Robert von Hagge and Bruce Devlin originally laid out the course and then Von Hagge came back for a redesign in 1993. The playing field is surrounded by water, mangrove thickets, and lush, tropical foliage. Set within a subtropical lagoon, the layout plays beside the bay and weaves around seven saltwater lakes, making for thrilling variety. The long dogleg par-4 7th, which features an approach shot over water, is the no. 1 handicap test. It has been honored as ‘ One of Golf’ s Greatest Holes.’ With an equally impressive finishing hole featuring water on both sides of the fairway and a spectacular view of Biscayne Bay, Crandon Golf at Key Biscayne does not let up from start to finish. The good news is all levels of players can hit from an appropriate teeing distance. In addition to the five regular sets of tee markers (plus an additional combo option) that range from 5,342 yards to 7,182 yards, there’ s also a junior set measuring 3,786 yards. Adding to the fun, you’ ll see a never-ending parade of wildlife, including a great variety of birds, as well as crocodiles and large iguanas. Crandon Golf at Key Biscayne boasts a pro shop and practice facilities that include a driving range and chipping, pitching and cutting greens. Don’ t miss out on a tee time at Crandon Golf at Key Biscayne, a true legend of the Miami public golf scene. It’ s a unique, scenic, and exhilarating course that will put your game to the test.
