Course photo for Upland Hills Country ClubPublic tee-time evidence

Upland, CA

Upland Hills Country Club

Upland Hills Country Club, located 40 miles from Los Angeles and just six miles from Ontario Airport, is a very popular layout known for its fun holes, exceptional mountain views, and generally quick pace of play. The course, designed by David A. Rainville in 1983, winds through a residential development one mile south of the 210 freeway. All levels of players can handle the challenge on this family-friendly par-70 course that tops out at just 5,558 yards from its longest set of tee markers. Upland Hills Country Club is a course that can give you a confidence boost. You’ ll find narrow tree- and house-lined fairways that require control of your ball flight. A number of ponds dot the routing and out of bounds looms because of the housing. In strategic places, small sections of tall screening help to shield players, residences, and even road traffic from errant shots. While the surrounding mountains provide a pretty setting, the playing field here is predominantly flat. The scorecard lists six par 3s and four par 5s, but a couple of those long holes are actually quite short— 433 and 420 yards, respectively, from the tips— so birdies and eagles are possible. The longest par 4 is 400 yards. Most players take special delight in the varied collection of par 3s that play in different directions and at different lengths. Upland Hills Country Club is known for its beautiful, large, nicely manicured greens. You won’ t find a lot of undulation in the putting surfaces, so with the proper read you should drain a putt or two during the round. Groups usually move along at a good pace at Upland Hills Country Club. The course is very walkable. Note that practice facilities are limited— there is no driving range. If you want to sit down and enjoy a meal at Upland Hills Country Club there’ s a restaurant located downstairs of the golf shop that is not affiliated with the golf course. While long hitters may feel reigned in at Upland Hills Country Club, players who enjoy shorter holes and a good chance for scoring will revel in this sporty layout and its mountain surroundings east of Los Angeles.

Course photo for SilverRock ResortPublic access under review

La Quinta, CA

SilverRock Resort

SilverRock Resort Golf Course in La Quinta stands out as one of the most spectacular and fun courses you can play in the entire Palm Springs golf mecca. When it debuted in 2005, this Arnold Palmer design represented La Quinta’ s entry into the realm of municipal golf, as it was conceived as the anchor of a site to include two luxury hotels. In the shadows of a towering mountain, the playing field’ s emerald green irrigated turf, extensive desert washes, enormous white sand bunkers, and various water features create an almost surreal, vibrant look that positively pops. Jaws often drop in awe when the routing brushes up against the mountain. SilverRock Resort Golf Course is not just eye candy, though— it boasts a championship history. From 2008 to 2011 it joined the rotation of courses used for the Palm Springs stop of the PGA, then known as the Bob Hope Desert Classic. Though the course gives highly skilled golfers all they can handle, the playing field, which was shortened and softened when the routing was altered to make room for the resort hotels, is also manageable for those who are less accomplished. SilverRock Resort Golf Course stretches to 7,239 yards, but there are five other sets of tee markers out on the links. The shortest pegs the course at 4,542 yards and completely eliminates forced carries. Additionally, the scorecard lists two combo distances, so everyone can find an appropriate yardage to play from. SilverRock Resort Golf Course may look intimidating from some of the tee boxes but its landing areas are more generous than they seem. Challenge throughout the round comes from the native areas and bunkering, from several lakes that seem like magnets for golf balls, and from the large, firm, undulating greens. You’ ll need to be on your short game to score well at SilverRock Resort Golf Course. Chances are you won’ t need to score well to enjoy the round here, however. The variety of holes, the unique look of the playing field, and the magnificent mountain that comes into play make for a memorable day of golf at SilverRock Resort Golf Course.
