Muscle Shoals, AL

The Shoals - The Schoolmaster

The Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail at The Shoals in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, is home to two 18-hole championship golf courses –the Fighting Joe and the Schoolmaster -- and lies between the Wheeler and Wilson dams on the Tennessee River. Wheeler Dam is named in honor of Gen. Joseph “Fighting Joe” Wheeler, the only Confederate General to attain the same rank later in the U.S. Army. The Fighting Joe golf course at The Shoals is the first Trail course to break 8,000 yards. The golf course is a long, links-style course that provides straight-forward golf. The golf course is as beautiful as it is long, as it is nestled along the Tennessee River with breathtaking views from the clubhouse as well as from the 18th hole. Fighting Joe accommodates all playing levels. The Schoolmaster is named for President Woodrow Wilson, who was responsible for getting Wilson Dam built, and was known as “the Schoolmaster of politics.” The tree-lined Schoolmaster golf course is wooded, rolling and more traditional with every hole keeping with the natural topography of the Tennessee River. The Shoals features a driving range with grass tees and a short game area. Daily tee times are available, so reserve yours today!

Killen, AL

Turtle Point Yacht & Country Club

Located along the banks of the Tennessee River and Wilson Lake, Turtle Point Yacht and Country Club is known not only for having one of the top golf courses in the state of Alabama, but also for its efforts to create a habitat for wildlife. Designed by world renowned architect Robert Trent Jones, Sr., the course is known for its natural topography and challenging layout. The natural topography of the site overlooking the Tennessee River required very little earth movement. Mr. Jones simply had to reveal the masterpiece already in place. Today, it is obvious that he achieved his goal. A golf course architect of legendary status, Robert Trent Jones, Sr. holds the acclaim as one of the most prolific and innovative course designers of all time. The first golf course architect inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame, Jones was the first to introduce extensive teeing areas and expansive greens fostering unlimited variation in play. During more than six decades, Jones designed or remodeled more than 500 courses in 45 states and 35 countries, with some of the world’s most famous among them. With his oft-quoted philosophy to make every hole a hard par but an easy bogey, he also had a profound impact on tournament golf. The course has been the host site of the SEC Championship, the State Amateur Championship, the Southern Amateur as well as other notable events over its 50 plus year history. The Country Club was certified in environmental planning by Audubon International in 2006. It was the first golf course in Alabama to receive the designation of Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary. The golf course has set aside 35 acres to manage as wildlife habitat. In addition, the country club has 55 acres of woodland on the east side of its property that creates prime wildlife habitat.
