Starfire Golf Club in north central Scottsdale is one of the most popular, user-friendly, and affordable golf facilities in the Valley of the Sun. This welcoming 27-hole club, conveniently located on Hayden Road between Cactus and Shea, strives to make the game fun for everyone. The playing field runs through a residential community and occupies the site of the old Scottsdale Country Club, one of Scottsdale’ s original golf courses. Though houses border the golf grounds, mature eucalyptus, pine and cottonwood trees make for an attractive buffer. Starfire Golf Club formerly featured three regulation nines designed by Arnold Palmer (Palmer modified the original 18 holes on the site and added a completely new nine). In 2018 the club implemented a plan to designate the former King and South (aka Hawk) nines as the front and back nines of the 18-hole King Course. At the same time, the old Squire nine by the parking lot was converted into the Mulligan 9, a short, 9-hole par-28 course, as well as an expanded driving range. Starfire Golf Club— King Course is a 6,106-yard, par-70 layout that gives players of all ability levels a chance to shoot a good score. Four judiciously spaced sets of tee markers ensure that everyone can find an appropriate distance to play from. The forward tees measure just 4,467 yards. With its tree-lined fairways and pretty water hazards, Starfire Golf Club— King Course sports a lush look (as long as drought conditions aren’ t ruling the day). The round is full of exciting shots. As the short distance of the course suggests, the layout calls for accuracy rather than power. When houses and the road are close by, the intimidation level rises. About half of the holes feature water hazards. The most memorable hole on Starfire Golf Club— King Course is the 4th, a par 3 with an island-green. For the most part, though, this is a traditional course that isn’ t about forced carries. The greens are receptive, uncomplicated, and pretty easy to read, so when you’ re standing over a putt you’ ll feel like you have a chance to drain it. In 2021 Bubba Watson famously came to Starfire Golf Club— King Course for Golf Digest magazine to see what a PGA Tour player would shoot on a popular, everyday public track. His 62 tied the course record, but, more importantly, his day at the course showcased the enjoyment everyone can have at an affordable price. Starfire
