La Cantera Golf Club in San Antonio boasts a gorgeous and fun 18-hole championship golf course in San Antonio. The playing field, long known as the Resort Course, is a Jay Morrish-Tom Weiskopf design from 1995 that is the chief amenity of the La Cantera Resort. Tee times are open to anyone— no overnight stays are required. La Cantera Golf Club used to be a 36-hole facility, but its Arnold Palmer-designed course permanently closed in 2021. Morrish and Weiskopf’ s layout has always been the star attraction, as they built the Resort Course to host the PGA Tour’ s Valero Texas Open. The course enjoyed a 15-year run (1995-2009) as a Tour venue. You’ ll be hard pressed to play a more exhilarating test than the 7th, a downhill, drivable par 4 that drops 70 feet from the tee boxes to the fairway en route to a green backdropped by Six Flags’ s Iron Rattler roller coaster. A roller coaster is the perfect symbol for La Cantera Golf Club’ s heaving, constantly moving terrain. Morrish and Weiskopf’ s design is full of variety. The round begins with the two toughest holes on the front nine— a long par 5 and a long par 4— before it eases up. Distance shouldn’ t be a problem at La Cantera Golf Club— five sets of tee markers give players options between 4,878 yards and 6,954 yards.
