Great Gorge Country Club is a 27 hole championship test designed by famed architect George Fazio, and it opened for play in 1970. Golf Digest has awarded Great Gorge four stars. In 2004, Crystal Springs Resort took over the operation of the facility. The par 36 Great Gorge Lake course is nine holes of sparkling water, matured trees, and elevation changes. When played in combination with either the Quarry or the Rail nines, the slope rating for 18 holes is in the mid-130s and the course rating is either 73.4 or 73.5. When played in conjunction with the Quarry nine, the total yardage maxes out at 6,710. When the Lake and Rail nines are combined, the yardage from the tips is 6,852. Located just twelve miles west of town, is a 27-hole, Vernon golf course destination known as Great Gorge Country Club. Designed to be one of the best golf courses in New Jersey by well-known course architect Greg Fazio, it opened in 1970 to be part of Hugh Hefner’s famous Great Gorge Playboy Club. Since 2004, the Club has been owned and operated by Crystal Springs Resort. Being in Northern New Jersey, the layout takes advantage of the many natural elevation changes, and dense trees, to create a fun, shot-makers type of course. Many of the doglegs left and right are also protected by fairway bunkers, and water comes into play on four of the first five holes of the Lakeside nine holes, which plays a total of 3,402 yards from the back tees, and is a par 36. When combined with the Quarry course, at a total of 6,710 yards, the slope is rated at 136. The third 9-hole layout at Great Gorge Country Club is named the Railside, and it plays 3,450 yards so when looking for tee times in Vernon you have three beautiful layouts to choose from. Club-style features include all that you'd expect. Practice facilities include driving range, chipping area, and practice putting green. The pro shop is run by PGA professionals who also offer lessons. There is also a thoroughly-stocked bar and quality restaurant.
